Spirit of the Cent-Negi!: Spirit of the Cent-Negi! [Episode 188177]

by William McDuff

The heavy whirr of the propeller of the brand new B.E.2a drowned out any possibility of conversation, though when they had landed at night for sleep, the pilot had always been friendly. Negi Springfield thought back over the trip: in a mere week, he left the familiar country side of England behind and slept on the sands of mysterious Egypt, filled his nose with the scent of spice in the fields of India, and stood on the bustling streets of the British Empire's crown jewel of the Orient in Hong Kong. This was the last day of the trip and his final destination was now passing beneath him, Japan.

It had been sixty years and more since the American, Perry, had cracked the nut of Japan and brought it into communication with the civilized world. But the Hermetic Order had given him the letter had said that he was to come to Japan and teach English, and arranged the plane. But why? And all-girls school at that. Certainly, he was the youngest mage to ever receive his academy papers, a mere ten years old, and had even been invited to become a member of the exclusive Century Club. His friend, Takahara had promised to meet him here, however. They had met at the Century Club, and had even studied together at the Hermetic Order back in calmer times...

Negi sighed. Chamo, his weaselly little friend was in his backpack, curled up on a Times that screamed the single word WAR! in letters that took up half the page above the fold. It had begun, and he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being shoved off away from the action due to his youth. Even should he only be over here a year, he felt that he was likely to miss out on the excitement of it.

The plane began to descend, the late August sun and the thickness of the air oppressive. He was excited, a little, and felt prepared, having studied the oriental tongue until he was confident he was nearly native. He was a bit eager, too, to prove his worth in this, his first posting, and he had to admit it wasn't the war or even Wales that he was sad about leaving behind. It was Nekane he was going to miss. Without his older 'sister', Nekane, he felt quite alone in this strange and mysterious land.

The clouds returned to above him as they dropped down onto the dirt runway, and he gathered up his things. He had directions, and needed to find this school, this Mahora Academy, if he wanted a soft bed to sleep in tonight.
