The tall figure of class 2-E’s most prominent member strode into the classroom, just seconds after the late bell. Ignoring their teacher, who entered behind him, he made his way to his seat in the front row. After positioning himself with his normal gravitas, he turned to his neighbour and asked imperiously, “Tendo Nabiki, who was the person you were speaking to while my fair flower Akane was suppressing the pretensions of those cretins this morning?”
Nabiki eyed him thoughtfully. “Saotome Ranma,” she replied after a short pause to decide how much she wanted to tell her delusional classmate; letting him develop an obsession with her sister had been an oversight on her part, and it would be beyond rude to permit him to do likewise with a guest.
“I See,” said Kuno, as though she had granted him some decisive information from which he could make important decisions. “How did you come to meet this ‘Saotome Ranma’?”
“Oh, our fathers made an agreement before we were born to join the families and our schools of martial arts,” she said. “They arrived yesterday and tried to engage Akane to…”
“Engage! My fair Tiger?” shrieked Kuno, rising from his chair. “I forbid it!”
“Kuno, buckets, hall, go now,” droned the teacher, unable to ignore his misbehaviour any further. The boy stormed out of the classroom.
“Wait, stop, Ranma’s a…” Nabiki paused when it became clear that her classmate wasn’t paying any further attention to her.
“Do you have anything to tell the class, Miss Tendo?”
“Only that he’s about to make a fool of himself. Again.”
The school day had started reasonably satisfactorily, as far as Ranma was concerned. Even having to visit the administration offices, to confirm her gender, hadn’t made her late to class (the staff had been most helpful, and curiously unfazed by her father’s idiocy), and her self-introduction had gone down well with her new classmates. It seemed being identified as Akane’s friend allowed many of them to quickly place her in the school hierarchy, and she looked forwards to meeting more new friends as a result later in the day. With luck, a few of them would be male.
The teacher hadn’t made any concession to her being behind the rest of the class in their studies, but having moved from school to school for the last ten years she was expecting that. Fortunately, while she hadn’t covered exactly the material he had taught since the beginning of the school year, she had learned something similar on the correspondence school while she was in China, so she wasn’t completely in the dark.
“NEVER!”
The entire class jumped at the thunderous bellow. The door crashed open.
“Tendo Akane, I shall free you of this unjust entrapment!”
“What!” yelped the girl addressed. “What are you talking…”
The hakama-clad figure surged forwards, reaching to engulf his target in an embrace. “Fear not, Fierce Tiger, for I shall find this Saotome Ranma and smite hiiiim!”
“Tendo Akane, buckets, hall, go now,” droned the teacher. “I grant there was provocation but that is no excuse for breaking the window.”
“What about Kuno?” asked a boy seated by the windows, looking out at the figure on the ground three floors below.
“He is a martial artist as well,” said the teacher repressively. “If he couldn’t land properly, he can pay for repairing the schoolyard himself.” He paused, and pulled out a small pad. “Hm, detention for being out of class…”
