WHPG, The Return: On a Slow Boat from China [Episode 191648]

by S/Rohm

A small freighter slowly made neared the coast of Japan. Aboard was not only the normal cargo one would expect to find on such a vessel, but also a group of passengers that would be wholly unexpected by anyone from this world.

The captain of the vessel was at his post, happy that this voyage was nearly over and studiously ignoring the oddity of the people on deck. So were most of the crew. The few whispers of spirits and oni had been silenced by the hefty passage fee and a demonstration of the foolishness of accosting any of the, er, guests. Still, most were relieved that they were almost to their destination. Soon these strange people would be ashore and no longer their concern.

Just now, the people in question were enjoying the summer day. Nabiki and Kasumi were sprawled out in the sun, looking much like the cats whose heritage they shared. They, along with Shampoo were watching and shouting encouragement and advice as Ranma and Rain sparred.

“Com’on!”

“Go high!”

“Go low!”

“You can do better than that! Quit play’n around!”

Genma was curled up on a nearby barrel, also watching as he lay in the sun. Though he was loathe to admit it, the mouse-girl wasn’t half bad. She was well-skilled in the basics of Anything-Goes, and was even making good progress on many of the more advanced portions of the art. Though she was a bit noisy, with a tendancy to let out loud squeaks of effort when going all out.

Of course, his son clearly outclassed the girl. It was obvious to Genma that Ranma was using this spar more to improve the girl’s skill than to seriously challenge himself. Still, the boy was doing quite well in his instruction. He would do well running a dojo, once he married one of Tendo’s daughters.

This last thought worried Genma. His son was entirely too close to these strange girls. Genma didn’t clearly understand the long and confused tale they had told him. Something about time travel and pooky-battles and other such nonsense. Genma would have dismissed it all as some fantasy, but there was the niggling problem of the girls and their odd attributes. As much as he wanted to dismiss it completely, it was clear that something had happened. And that something looked very likely to throw Genma’s carefully laid plans out the window!

Genma had been shocked when, after a few days on the road, he had realized why his son always seemed less-than-well-rested each morning. When he finally understood just what 'endurance training' Ranma was engagred in, he knew that somehow, someway, he had to put a stop to it!

The bad thing was, there really wasn’t much he could do about it. Being a cat made it quite hard to brow-beat er, guide his son on the proper path in life. (In fact, his one attempt to stand in the way of such activity brought a reaction out of those apparently oh-so-friendly girls that still caused Genma to shudder in fear. Clearly his son needed rescuing from their clutches!)

At least they were nearly back to Japan. Maybe this could still work. Maybe he could figure out a way to seperate the boy from those girls. Maybe he could get Ranma over to Tendo’s home somehow. Maybe…

“Oh, there you are! I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

Genma squawked as he was grabbed by a long-haired blonde. Now why did he feel this sudden premonition of doom?
