The plan was simple: continue wandering around Japan on their training journey while Saturn searched for her sister Genies’ rings.
Defeated by their opponents, it was very much in genre for the Saotome martial artists to throw them themselves into extra intensive training until they feel ready to challenge them again. They knew it was expected of them and even Genma seemed to thrive on it. True, he’d rested on his laurels for a long time, but that was because he’d reached a plateau in the art where he’d hardly had to do more than train with Ranma to maintain his not inconsiderable skill. Faced with a new challenge and a worthy goal (restoring his humanity, restoring his son’s manhood and saving his favorite neck), Genma managed to rise to the occasion. Somewhat.
For Genie Saturn, however, it was very much out of genre. She’d always found that increased power came not from training but from need. Faced with certain defeat, the Warrior Genies had always somehow managed found that extra increment that brought victory. It was something that just happened as long as their masters’ hearts were pure.
Genma agreed that victory could indeed often be obtained by a last minute insight, but entering a fight relying on it to happen was foolish. However he wouldn’t expect a weak little girl to understand that.
Saturn reminded him just how ‘weak’ she was. Then she agreed to train with Ranma on the understanding that Genma had to clear his training ideas with her first, or she’d remind him again. Only harder!
Genma grumbled, remembered how the “lion-fist” attempt had turned out, then grudgingly agreed (and immediately tried to figure a way around her girlish restrictions).
Ranma scratched her head a lot but was happy to learn that her new friend would be training with him … her … whatever.
As one of the most magically powerful Genies, physical power wasn’t Saturn’s forte. Moreover, physically she was just an ordinary little girl. She spent a lot of time working on increasing her endurance, and even more time recovering from that endurance training. Genma kept complaining that she was slowing them down, but she was amazed at her progress. It was like she was really earning a power up for the very first time.
They’d settled down into a routine until …
