“Master, I’m done in the bath if you want-WHAT THE HELL?” Nabiki shouted as she opened the door.
On the bed where her Master had been sleeping, there was now a dark brown cocoon atop the covers. Beside the bed, Kasumi’s bloodless corpse told her that Ranma had finished eating before he had creating this…thing. But there was nothing there to explain why.
Nabiki rushed over to the bed and placed her hands on Ranma’s chrysalis. She could feel it faintly pulsing, and could hear her Master’s heartbeat after putting her ear to it, but no other movement. For whatever reason, Ranma had entered his cocoon for some kind of hibernation, not a physical change.
“Great,” Nabiki mumbled. “You gave me all this power, and all I’m supposed to do with it is baby-sit an oversized shell.” The girl rolled her eyes and sat down on the bed with a pout covering her face. Nabiki had thought her Master wanted a lover, not a bodyguard.
Still, Nabiki did her duty. At first she just sat in the room, just waiting for Ranma to hatch. Days passed, and then weeks, and nothing happened; at least to Ranma. After Yuka and Akane’s other friend came by to visit, Nabiki ended up having to move since they discovered the murder of her family and ended up becoming food themselves.
As the months and years passed, Nabiki discovered many things about herself. The big thing was that all that vampire lore crap was just that: crap. She could walk in the sun, eat garlic, stand to be in any kind of water, admire herself in a mirror, and get stabbed in the heart all she wanted without ill effect.
Unfortunately, she also found out that frozen in age at the point of death stuff didn’t seem to be taking. Year after year, Nabiki found herself growing older. It wasn’t until she became a full adult that everything seemed to stop; although Nabiki just chalked it up to finally reaching maturity.
Mastering her newfound powers turned out to be pretty easy. It was almost as if her body already knew what to do, and just needed her brain to give the command. Nabiki was stronger than any living human, and her monstrous form seemed to have no limit to its strength. She was faster too, and not just reaction time or pure running speed. Whenever she became endangered, time seemed to slow down and Nabiki could move faster than the human eye could follow, or the brain could even think. Nabiki found she could also change her shape into more than just a monster; her human form was completely customizable.
Nabiki ended up moving around a lot, about every eight months or so. She was careful, always stealing from the blood bank and never killing a human as to keep her Master safe from any attention Nabiki would draw herself. Still, there were some incidents. A bunch of Americans seemed to know something about vampires were always snooping around after staying at a new place for five or six months.
When she grabbed one and asked him about it while putting holes in a few of his organs, the guy spilled all he knew to Nabiki, which wasn’t much. Although they were bloodsuckers, their technical name was chiroptera, or chiropterans. There was more than just her and Ranma, but the guy she had captured didn’t know much more than that.
She continued to look into the whole thing, but only poked around here and there to avoid the attention of the military. She did make some rather startling revelations, despite her restrictions Nabiki found out some more things, but became distracted by much more important events. After moving to Okinawa, Nabiki sensed Ranma was finally ready to awaken from his sleep.
She hoped he would be pleased with what she had prepared for him.
