Actually the whole thing was a dream sequence. What was really going on was that all the magical girls had gathered to attend Tokyo's first Magical Girl Blitzball Tournament. The magical girls of Tokyo would be facing the blitzball teams of different regions of Japan. In the end, there could be only one team. And that team would win the Prize of facing off against Zanarkand's best blitball team.

Sakura was a bit worried. Team Sakura was going to be facing so many other magical girl blitzball teams. And even if they won, they would have to face the Zanarkand Abes, Zanarkand's number one blitzball team, at the end. She had heard that their leader, Tidus, was one of the best blitzball players in Zanarkand.
But she was determined to win. She would win, and she would do Japan proud. She would prove that Japan had the best blitzball teams of anywhere.
And if, no, when she won Zanarkand would be honor bound to trade their dimensional traveling technology to Japan. Of course if Japan lost the last match... then whatever magical girl team was the one to loose would have to serve Zanarkand for fifty years. 'I will not loose.' she thought. 'My team will be the one to face the Zanarkand Abes in the end, and we will then win! Failure is not an option for us!'.
