[Episode 194748]
Then there were stores like Spells ‘R Us who tended to make permanent changes to their customers, then cover up their activities in a way that … thoroughly discouraged repeat business.
Genko Saotome had been a tomboy who had run away from home to learn martial arts. She’d found Happosai to be a harsh master, and strict disciplinarian, but he’d trained her well. Just… not to become a martial artist.
After Soun and she had locked the dirty old man in a cave, they’d parted ways. Genko somewhat regretted that, but Soun had basically sold her off to pay for food at that restaurant, so she’d had little choice. It had been a freakishly pleasant few years of marriage –luxurious and not that bad in the bedroom, but more than a little creepy– until it was realised Happosai’s training had left her unable to bear children. She’d been rather relieved about that, all things considered.
After the divorce, she’d supported herself the only way she knew how, only to recently hook up with Soun once more. Things were a little uncomfortable between her and his three daughters, but as she stepped out of… she paused, then looked around at, ah, … the New U Salon, she knew she’d found something that would make things much easier.
“Why did you do that?” the assistant asked and blew a gum bubble as she watched Genma step out of the Spells R Us door and was deposited onto the street in front of the New U Salon, with a sudden change of history.
“Mister Saotome’s shoplifting deserved to be punished,” the wizard explained. “To be fair, he got off rather lightly, don’t you think? “
“Yeah, you support the breeding of endangered species,” the girl answered. “Not what I was asking. I know about the ‘shoplifters will be prostituted’ policy. But, why erase her memories like that? I mean, what was the point?”
“Oh, well, he, er, she will always know that she was responsible for her downfall, on some level. Even if she does not recall the exact reason.”
“Also not what I was asking,” the girl responded. “I mean, why change things retrospectively?”
“You know we have to keep a low profile,” the wizard explained, “and providing a back story keeps unhappy customers from exposing us.”
“Uhm, yeah, sure, but around here ‘a wizard did it’ is a perfectly reasonable explanation,” the girl pointed out. “So why go to all that trouble and expense of triggering a chainfire cascade?”
“Because… shut up, that’s why.”
