"Because you intrigue me, Ataru," the Doctor explained.
Ataru jolted. "I do?"
"Certainly. There are many aspects about you that interest me. And in the long run, would also interest Yiziba." The Doctor lightly smiled. "You see, despite all attempts at 'taming' you, you do your best to live your life the way you choose to live it. That is something any Yizibajohei can admire."
The younger man's cheeks started to redden. Most people -- hell, everyone in Tomobiki to one extent or another! -- didn't give a damn about anything he wanted to do for himself. "I see . . . "
"Atop that, there is a rather profound problem developing among the current generation of Yizibajohei," the Doctor added as he pointed at his host. "One, I believe, you can certainly assist in resolving."
Ataru jolted, pointing at himself. "Me?"
The Doctor grinned as he gazed over at Ataru's small shelf of books. One particular black book floated out from between two textbooks to gently land in his hand. "Hey!" Ataru gasped on seeing which book the older man had just telekinetically grabbed. "That's my . . . "
"Special journal concerning all the ladies currently resident in Tomobiki, not to mention elsewhere," the Doctor cut him off. "Be assured, Ataru, I will not damage this book, not like Lum has threatened to do on the odd occasion. But this could be quite an inspiration for you in the future." He held up the book in emphasis. "Would you care to guess what the male-to-female ratio is on Yiziba right now?"
Ataru blinked. "About even?"
A shake of the head. "No. For every one hundred females, there are two hundred and forty-nine males."
Silence.
"Holy shit . . .!" Ataru breathed out.
"Unfortunately," the Doctor said as he allowed the black book to return to its place on Ataru's shelf. "A quite annoying side-effect of everyone having metahuman powers on Yiziba is that, especially for most males, there is this quite overwhelming drive for physical exertion, usually expressed in the form of 'fight scenes' between each other. That . . . " -- here, he rolled his eyes -- " . . . for the most part has overridden the natural drive for procreation."
Ataru's eyes started to spiral. "What does that mean . . .?"
The Doctor did not appear annoyed at his host's inability to fully understand what was being said to him. "It means, dear boy, that most men on Yiziba are more interested in beating each other up than chasing girls," he elaborated.
The younger man's jaw hit the floor again, and then a smirk crossed his face, his hand reaching up to rub the end of his chin. "Really . . .?"
"Yes, Ataru, it is true. And because there is no legitimate form of 'marriage' or any other sort of bonding between the would-be parents of children . . . "
"'NO MARRIAGE?!'" Ataru screamed.
Again, the Doctor was not disturbed. "Your willingness to stay 'single' despite Lum's claims would make you quite an item of interest to Yizibajohei females." The Doctor raised his finger in emphasis. "While it would not exactly fit your dreams of a 'harem,' it would . . . "
"Hey! Hey! That's enough! You convinced me!" Ataru cut him off with a dismissive wave of his hand. "I'll do it! What do I have to do?"
The Doctor smiled.
