"What about your spirit beast?" asked the Professor.
"Well," said Ash. "I'll just get one from the gashapon machine over there."
"There's no gashapon over there," pointed out Brock as he observed where Ash was walking, then turned his attention to something more interesting as the Professor began checking out Nurse Nanako.
"I figure you're going to be busy," said Ash with a glance over his shoulder. "Especially as Nurse Nanako just woke up with your hand up her blouse."
The Professor blinked as he saw that Nurse Nanako's eyes were now open. "Oh. Heh heh. However did that happen?"
Nurse Nanako blinked again and her eyes tracked down.
The Professor removed his hand from where it had been checking his nurse, and used his other hand to slap the offending one. "Oh. Bad hand. Naughty. Oh well, no harm done."
Ash ignored the screams that followed that, instead going inside the door to where he'd spotted the gashapon machine.
Misty and Misty blinked and then turned to each other. "Did you see that? Yeah. He just vanished. Just for a second. WOULD YOU STOP THAT?!"
Ranma looked around. He had stepped through the door and was now in a big elevator that seemed to be going up. Over there was a piano playing something vaguely mournful while some wordless opera-sounding voice accompanied it. "Mind if I use this?"
"Go right ahead, Ash. Or should I say, Mister Saotome?"
"You know?" asked Ash, looking at the man a little closer.
"My name is Igor, and this is Elizabeth, she is a resident of the Velvet Room like myself," said the oddly shaped man sitting on the chair.
"Pleased to meet you," said the girl, her body language seeming to be all wrong for her appearance.
"So you know who I am?" prompted Ash.
"I know that you are Ash in this life, and were Ranma Saotome in the previous world," said Igor. "Myself, Elizabeth, and this room - we are all leftovers from about three worlds ago. The Velvet Room itself exists outside space, outside time, in a borderland between what is real and what is dream."
"So can you tell me what is going on around here?" asked Ash hopefully.
"Alas, no," said Igor. "However, we can provide you some assistance from time to time. Such as when you utilize your Persona."
"This world doesn't have Persona, Igor," said Elizabeth. "This world uses spirit animals."
"Oh yes, that's right," said Igor. "Well, there are similarities. Here. You get one coin to use in the machine for now. Claim your spirit animal, and eventually we will meet again. Perhaps then you'll have a coin of your own that will fit that machine."
Ranma nodded and took the coin, fitting it into the slot, turning the knob and then catching the little plastic 'egg' containing his prize.
The Velvet Room faded around him, and he saw the scene in the lab - except that someone had hit 'pause' because nothing was moving. As the last of the Velvet Room faded away, the scene began moving again - with Misty now yelling at herself.
Opening the plastic egg, Ranma found that his spirit animal was:
