Faking It - Nodoka's Career: Oops. [Episode 196551]

by jdc

“Hey, Hiromi,” Makoto Kashiwagi began as she approached her girlfriend’s seat in their classroom.

“What’s up, Mako-chan?” Hiromi looked up from her desk.

“Have you noticed that Kanna’s absent today again?”

The short-haired girl turned in her seat and looked at the empty chair. “Yeah. It’s been several days now.”

Makoto bit her lower lip, her worry plain in her face.

“Are you worried about her?”

The tall girl nodded almost imperceptibly. “Yeah, a little, I guess,” After a moment she looked down at her lover. “Can I ask you a favor?”

Hiromi smiled. “Sure, I’ll ask around and see if I can find out why she’s absent.”

That made the half-alien girl brighten. “Really?” When her cousin nodded, she bent over and gave the smaller girl a hug. “I’ll show my thanks later when we’re home,” she seductively whispered in Hiromi’s ear.

Hiromi turned bright red at the innuendo and by the time she could react, Makoto was already back in her seat, giving her the victory sign and a toothy grin.

--

"Komatsu-san? Do you have a moment?" Hiromi asked the other girl as she approached Kanna's former girlfriend at the end of the school day. She had thought about on how she would ask the other girl about Kanna the whole afternoon, and ultimately decided the direct approach would be the best.

The taller girl turned to her classmate. "Yes, Ishimaru-san?"

"Um, I've noticed that Kan-, I mean, Morisato-san has been absent from school for a while now. Is she sick?"

Worry for her former lover showed plainly on the face of Tamami. "No, I haven't heard anything. I tried to call her, but she won't answer my calls. Even Morisato-sensei won't answer me when I ask her about Kanna. Do you know anything, Ishimaru-san?"

"Ah, I'm sorry, Komatsu-san, but I don't know anything either," Hiromi scratched the back of her head apologetically. "I was actually hoping you might know something."

"I see. I guess I'll have to visit her at home then."

"You will?"

"Yes. I'm becoming really worried about Kanna. She wouldn't miss school this long and Morisato-sensei wouldn't keep the reason from me if it wasn't something very serious."

The short-haired girl felt a chill go down her spine. "I see. If you see her and if it isn't too much of a bother, Komatsu-san, could you please tell her to get well soon for me?" Hiromi carefully said. What she actually wanted to ask was for Tamami to tell her as well if she learned anything, but she was afraid it might arouse the other girl's suspicions.

Tamami nodded. "I will, Ishimaru-san. I am sure it will make Kanna happy," she picked up her bag. "If that's all, I should get going now."

Makoto's cousin couldn't shake the feeling of dread as she watched Tamami leave the classroom.

--

"What's wrong, Hiromi? You're awfully quiet today," the half-alien asked her lover as they sat on her bed reading the latest manga.

"I think something serious might be wrong with Kanna, Makoto."

Makoto went a shade paler at her cousin's words. "Wh-what makes you think that, Hiromi?"

"When I talked with Komatsu-san earlier today, she said she didn't know anything either, and from the way she said it, I can't help but get the feeling that it's something that Morisato-sensei wants to keep quiet about."

"Morisato-sensei? Kanna's sister?"

"Yes," the smaller girl bit her lower lip in worry.

Makoto put the manga she was reading aside. "What do you think it could be, Hiromi?"

The short-haired girl shook her head. "I don't want to speculate about it too much. There could be all sorts of reasons..." she trailed off.

"But?"

"I just can't help but feel that she's:"
