Gunfire was currently meeting those trying to access such things.
"Damn situation," said one of the Mexicans, lowering his rifle. "Hate having to shoot the kids."
"They keep offering American dollars, you'd think they'd figure out that's no good," agreed the second. "American dollars only worth toilet paper now."
"Yeah, we don't want to offend THEM, do we?" said the first Mexican, his head nodding towards the smoke trail that had been a city named Nogales. "Used to be we only had to shoot people crossing the border from the South."
"Times change, my friend," said the second. "Oh look, there's someone else. This one's got a white flag."
"We'll let them get a little closer, it'll be easier to loot them that way," said the first.
"Hell of a job."
"That it is."
The CNN anchorman smiled with the look of some very happy orthodontists and dentists in his past and read the teleprompter. One would think from his demeanor that everything was perfectly fine. "The Galactic Federation occupying force has imposed strict curfews in the lawless aggressors of the United States. They regret the inconvenience, but in order to deal with the threat of these violent criminals, it is necessary to maintain law and order."
"That makes sense," said Rei.
"Vicious rebels have resisted the peaceful Galactic Federation's overtures, and as a result the Galactics have reluctantly had to cut off all access to the continent," continued the newsanchor. "Due to the number of criminals attempting to flee their just authority into Canada, they report that they have reluctantly had to move into that country as well - stretching their forces all the thinner. Therefore they have to take the regrettable step of calling in reinforcements for occupying the larger than expected territory."
"That sounds reasonable," offered Usagi, though she sounded a little uncertain.
"Got it," said Ami as she ran her computer. "He's blinking exactly once every 12.257 seconds. There are some other signs too, they don't have it down exactly."
"What does that mean exactly?" asked Minako.
"He's computer-generated," said Ami. "He's not real."
"I always thought he looked fake," said Minako.
"More fake than usual," said a wincing Ami.
"There is absolutely nothing to worry about," said the fake newanchor. "The Galactic Federation spokesmen state that they are simply here to remove the potential threat offered by the United States."
"So they're telepathic carnivores," said Haruka, "meaning they eat meat but the pain and suffering are sort of like the seasoning on a meal?"
"Yes, that's exactly it," said Setsuna, her voice slurred a bit from the alcohol she'd been ingesting. "Makes it tastier. They can also project - immobilize their prey with terror or increase paranoid tendencies."
"So what exactly can we do?" asked Michiru. "A small group we could fight. There has to be millions of these things."
