“Sure, how about we peek into Frozen Waist?” Ranma then went into a kind of daze and moaned, “Mmm, ice cream!”
Nabiki rolled her eyes. “After lunch, I promise, my treat. But we can’t eat just ice cream for lunch... Well, we can, but we shouldn’t.” With that, she walked towards the To-foolery and looked at the menu posted on the wall.
“Let’s see here ... miso soup and tofu; rice and tofu; miso soup and rice and tofu; miso soup with tofu, rice, and fried tofu; tofu in miso soup, fried veggies, fried tofu, rice and tofu; tofu, miso soup with tofu, fried tofu, stir fried veggies with tofu, tofu stir fired rice, and tofu; tofu, tofu, fried tofu, crispy tofu, tofu stir fried tofu, deep fried tofu, yakitori, tofu, tofu, and tofu; and shrimp tempura alongside tuna and swordfish sushi and sashimi delicately served with a miso paste sauce and on a bed of tofu. I wonder what if someone doesn’t like tofu?”
“Doesn’t sound that bad, think they got tofu, tofu, tofu, tofu, crispy fish, tofu, and tofu?” Ranma smirked at Nabiki.
Nabiki made a face. “Ugh, I don’t think I am in a mood for that much tofu.”
“Well, miso soup with tofu, rice, and fried tofu doesn’t come with as much tofu.” Ranma pointed out in a helpful manner.
Nabiki’s response was to hit him in the arm. Looking into the eatery’s window showed Nabiki waiters dressed as clowns with funny walks, a group of traditionally dressed Ainu sitting in the corner, chanting the merits of tofu, and a couple dining on what appeared to be tofu flambé. She also overheard one of the waiters say “Homey don’t play that game” as he pistol whipped a customer upside his head with a rock filled sock.
“Ranma, let’s try a different place. OK?” While Nabiki may have asked nicely, her insistent pulling on Ranma’s arm left him no real choice.
Ranma looked at the next diner. “Well, feel like Mongolian stir-fry?”
“Nope, that place gives me the creeps.”
Ranma looked at her funny for a moment. “We could at least look in.”
Upon looking in, Nabiki discovered the windows were completely blacked out, showing only their reflections.
“Gah!” Ranma screamed out in fright. “No wonder you were afraid of this place. Look at that hideous monster.”
Nabiki noticed he was pointing at her reflection. “Funny, Saotome.” She gave him a good whack to his left shoulder. “I’ll remember this the next time you ask for a favor.” Her angry tone was tempered, however, by the mirth dancing in her eyes. “Come on, let’s see what the other places have to offer.”
Continuing their circuit of the courtyard, Ranma and Nabiki came upon the other side. Ranma gazed hungrily at the ice cream store. “Wow, they have a colossal sundae: eight scoops of your choice of ice cream, five bananas, and all the toppings you want.” Ranma gave Nabiki puppy dog eyes. “Please, please, pretty please.”
“Oh stop begging, it’s not manly. After lunch. OK?”
Ranma sighed. “Fine. What about this place? I remember having techs-mechs once. Strange food, it was spicy and full of something called puh-bla-mmo or pull-baba-loo-no and sao-sa. I think I ordered a chicken fah-git-a-boutit or some such. American food, I think.”
Nabiki paused to look over the diner, “I don’t see a menu or a window. Want to go in?”
Ranma simply nodded. The building was made from some sort of dull sandy colored concrete. The door slid aside as they approached, releasing a hiss of air. Stepping in, the hall ran to their right. The opening at the end was to the left, and by it stood a mechanical man in a barman’s apron.
“Sorry,” his synthesized voice monotonously stated, “but we don’t serve your kind here.”
Ranma and Nabiki stared at each other until...
