"The same as you, I expect." The girl quickly retorted, eying Harry and Ron, their arms full of treats. "I'm here to comfort Hecate. Only instead of sweet tarts and cakes, I'm bringing her potions homework so she doesn't fall behind."
"It's only a day." Ron remarked in disbelief.
"Potions homework?" Was all Harry could ask.
Hermione rolled her eyes. "You overheard her that night. She views herself in competition with us, and wants to score well. Now why are you here?"
"Well, she is sort of a friend..." Ron was plainly uncomfortable as he admitted that.
"Yah." Harry added, then he blurted. "Besides, you saw how Slytherin acted. They hardly clapped for her at all until we started. How likely are they to visit her?"
"You're right." Hermione nodded primly. Then, following their united intent, turned down the last corridor to march to a stop halfway down. Karen and Melody, Kodachi's two Slytherin friends, were outside, listening at the door. Melody saw them and hissed for silence, motioning the Gryffindors forward.
Puzzled, without even thinking much about it, the three Gryffindors joined the Slytherins already listening at the hospital wing portal.
"That's Dumble..." Harry started saying "That's Dumbledore's voice!" But Karen's hand over his mouth prevented much of the outburst.
"I am sure," Dumbledore was saying from inside, "That you have thought this over thoroughly. In that case." They could hear the rustle of his robes as he rose. "I shall have to accept it. It was not what I planned when inviting you here, but perhaps..." The elderly headmaster paused, as if he'd allowed himself a smile. "Yes, perhaps it will serve just as well. Now, if you will excuse me, I shall make preparations."
Albus Dumbledore swept out the door in more than a usual rush, finding five children just outside, but failing to remark upon them as he passed by, giving them his usual smile. No sooner was he gone than Karen and Melody rushed inside, pouring their treats on the bed's sheets as they plopped down, both on either side of Hecate.
"Tell us you didn't mean it!" Karen shouted, eyes wide.
"Please, we'll do anything." Melody was in tears. "Just don't..."
