Yet, he also wasn't all that bad in a crunch. He knew that even if he was terrible in scholarly pursuits, he was damned good in a fight, and this was what this might as well have been. There was likely going to be some sort of struggle down the road, and he'd always had an instinctive knack for being able to adapt to any sort of trouble.
What he needed was someone who he could trust... at least in this instance. Not that he thought that anyone would try to stab him in the back, but he'd only choose Ryoga if he wanted to check out the backside of beyond. Fighters were out simply because he didn't want an immediate bit of combat. As much as he'd respect someone's abilities as a martial artist, he needed the ability to realize that combat wasn't the best option at times. And being able to outthink enemies, keep a cool head, and handle this sort of technology would all help.
For all of those requirements, there was only one individual that he could think would be helpful.
"So we need more people, at least one person who can operate the Helm," mused Ranma aloud. "Let's see. How about Nabiki?"
Nodoka blinked as her son started walking off, and trailed after him. "Nabiki?"
"Yeah. No offense, but ya ain't got the only advice I need."
"Oh, that's quite alright."
"Glad ta hear it. Ya see, she knows how ta make people run ta her beat, and knows how ta run circles 'round 'em. But I don't wanna get ya mad."
"I'm happy that you worry about my feelings," his mother murmured, smiling kindly at him.
"'Course."
"But still. Nabiki...."
He didn't know why, but Ranma felt the oddest chill run down his back as he noticed his mother's thoughtful look, while:
