The Fourth Child: A Thin Rei of Hope [Episode 202269]

by The Insane Hiker

The situation was eerie as Rei Ikari wandered the streets to where her ride into the city was to pick her up, the completely abandoned streets; she had just arrived about half an hour ago in the Kanto region by rail from Okayama after receiving a letter from her father’s office, along with a somewhat comical photo of Misato Katsuragi the driver coming to pick them up, and an ID Card of some sort. It had been three years since she saw him ever since the fight her father and brother had at their mother’s grave.

She hoped that this meant they were burying the hatchet, hopefully not in each other, and that maybe they could be a family again.

“Rei, is that you?” she turned to the source of the voice to see a face she had only seen recently in photo’s from letter exchanges.

“Shinji, it’s great to see you!” She said happily as she rushed forward to hug her twin standing further down the street near a phone booth, and only separated when something sent the sheet metal doors rattling.

They both turned to look at the source, that was frighteningly nearby, several of the JSDF’s hover-jets were slowly retreating as the object of their caution came into view from behind a large hill; it was a massive and oddly organic monster and it was headed right in their direction.

Suddenly an attack began as several missiles were sent flying at the beast, only to explode short of the monster, needless to say both of them were petrified in fear.

Suddenly the giant lifted his hand and sent out a lance of energy at one of the hover-jets, causing it to crash down about ten or so meters away from them. Suddenly the monster glowed and seemed to take a short flight, which ended right on top of the downed aircraft. Causing to explode, and as we shielded ourselves from the explosion a car skidded into place between them and the giant. Immediately the woman in the photo that Rei and her brother had both been sent opened the car door and asked, “Sorry, am I real late?”

Immediately Shinji went in, and slipped as he went over the passenger seat and into the back landing upside-down. Trying not to stop and laugh at her brother’s misfortune, Rei followed right behind him clutching both of their bags.

She shut the door just in time as more explosions hit nearby and the roof of the car was cratered by the debris. Instincts telling her this was going to be a bumpy ride, Rei buckled-up just before the lady sent the car screaming into a reverse two-point turn, as the monster’s foot set down right where their car had been seconds ago. Talk about a near miss, Rei thought to herself as the driver preceded to take them away from the action.

Still the car stopped just as the exited the valley and allowed Shinji and Rei to switch positions since the drive out of the city left her longing for the stability of the backseat. Meanwhile Misato straddled over Shinji as she tried to catch site of the battle with a set of auto-range binoculars, and saw something that panicked her, “Now wait just a second,” she said, “No, their going to use an N2 Mine, get down,” and as she smothered Shinji, Rei thanked the kami that she buckled her self in as the shock wave from the explosion sent their vehicle rolling, and she hit her head against the window and the roof until the car came to rest on its side leaving Rei hanging as her head seemed to swim when she turned it.

When the shock wave died down Shinji and the woman climbed out of the car hacking, then the woman turned to ask Rei, who was still in the car, “Rei are you alright?”

“I feel like a giant bruise, but I think I’ll live.” Rei let out a slight laugh until her ribs objected to her since of humor.

“Hold tight and brace yourself Shinji and I will try to push the car right-side up.”

“Take your time,” Rei said in trying to make light of her situation, “it’s not like I’m going anywhere.”

After Shinji and Misato had pushed the car back onto all four-wheels Misato took a look at Rei to make sure that she was alright, and decided that she was fine. Afterward Misato went to find a replacement for the missing gas tank that blew off, and ended up cobbling together an electric motor out of a few dozen stolen car batteries to get them into town, along with some duck tape repairs to the vehicles body and they were off on their way. Of course their ride into Tokyo-3 wasn’t without incident especially when Shinji commented on Misato’s lack of maturity.

Trying to calm down their drivers temper tantrum Rei decided to distract her, “Um Misato, did you mail those letters yourself?”

“Why yes,” Misato smiled, “why was their some confusion in the directions?”

“No,” Rei said sheepishly, “but I think that you might have given me the photo you intended for Shinji.”

That revelation kept Misato quiet until they hit got on the car train.

This silence lasted right up until Shinji asked, “Are we going to see our father if they were going to see our father?”

“Of course, of course we are,” she replied nervously after checking her makeup.

Rei could tell that Shinji was starting to think back to when their dad sent them off to live with their relatives. Thank goodness Misato distracted them by asking for the ID cards that their father sent them, and gave them both folders marked NERV covered with classified document warnings. Followed by Shinji saying, “What am I thinking about? He wouldn’t ask me to come if he didn’t need me for something.”

“Come on Shinji, give dad a chance.” Rei said trying to calm her brother down, “You never know this might actually be a chance for you two to finally talk to each other.”

Any further comments were silenced by the awe-inspiring sight of the Geo-Front, but still the reunion between the twins and their father loomed, and Misato wasn’t the only one apprehensive about the meeting.
