The lights dim and a spotlight comes on, pointed towards the empty stage. A man in a tuxedo walks into the circle of light and bows. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he begins, “for your delectation we have one Ranma Saotome.” A picture of the familiar martial artist appears behind the speaker as the audience grumbles a bit, bemoaning the predictable and overused character.
The speaker ignores the objections and continues. “It has been said many a time that Ranma could not solve the many issues he faces if his life depended on it. Tonight, we shall test this theory.” He grinned in a sinister manner. “Empirically.”
As the audience discussed the possible meaning of this, the speaker produced a cell phone and dialed an improbably long series of digits. After a brief wait, he smiled and said “Buon giorno.”
It was a typical day in Nerima. The sun was shining. The birds were singing. Kuno was soliloquizing. In fact, as another day at Furinkan High came to a close, the only thing that seemed out of the ordinary was the infant sitting on a roof, holding a sniper rifle.
Reborn, the aforementioned infant, was the star hitman of the Famiglia Vongola, one of the foremost Mafia families in Italy. While he was technically in Japan to find and properly groom Vongola X for his role as the next Don of the family, that did not mean he was excused from his normal duties of ending lives on request. In this case, the request was one Ranma Saotome.
Reborn didn’t know who had ordered the hit, nor why they requested he use the secret weapon of the Vongola family, the Dying Will Bullet. However, as a professional assassin, for whom and why were immaterial. All that mattered was who, where, when, and how. Armed with these four data as well as his sniper rifle, Reborn positioned his sight firmly on Ranma’s forehead.
“Arrivederchi, Signore Saotome,” whispered the minute Mafioso.
He pulled the trigger.
