The very next thing Ranma was aware of was waking up in the hallway outside his classroom, feeling completely refreshed. Peering through a window at the clock, he discovered that he’d arrived exactly when and where he was promised he'd be sent after doing his job. Or at least it looked that way from where he was standing right now.
Ranma waited patiently for his past self to disappear before attempting to sneak back into his third period class. Although it was probably possible, Ranma wasn’t half as worried about causing time paradoxes as he was with getting in unnoticed by everyone. Ms. Hinako had a tendency to get carried away when she thought someone was acting like a delinquent. Because of that, he really didn’t want to get accused of skipping class on his way back into it.
Fortunately, a well aimed piece of candy was all it took for the child-woman to get distracted and lose touch with the world around her for a second. Ranma used her momentary distraction to sneak back into the classroom without Ms. Hinako noticing him.
A near universal groan of embarrassment came from the class as their teacher’s instant distraction covered Ranma’s entry from the rest of the class as well. Well, most of the class anyway, Ukyo and Akane noticed what happened to their mutual fiancé though, and the tomboy at least wasn’t happy about it.
"So how was your first day at work, Pervert? I see they kicked you back out fast enough," growled Akane under her breath. Nabiki had told the tomboy about Ranma’s new job just before dinner last night, just for the fun of it.
Unsurprisingly, Akane had been throwing accusations at him ever since, along with a few other things if he said anything back. His one attempt at an explanation that he’d been tricked earned them all a demonstration of Ranma’s new medical benefits.
"'I get sent back approximately ten minutes before I leave', remember Akane?" Ranma growled back. "And if you must know all I did was re-price inventory and memorize stock labels. Took me until dinner to do it all too," Ranma added sulkily, rubbing the spot where she’d tried to cave his head in the night before.
"So was it all that bad, Sugar?" Ukyo asked him embarrassedly. Ranma irritably remembered Nabiki selling Ukyo the information on his new job just before late bell this morning. She’d been watching Ranma like a hawk all morning because of it too.
Ranma shivered. "Mom will probably love the place. But if I didn't work there I doubt I'd ever go in there again. I just hope the customers aren't as scarey as the merchandise is," Ranma told the chef uncomfortably. "It's not all bad though, my boss did give me a raise for reorganizing one of the sections a little better. Oh and happy birthday, Ukyo" she added, pulling the wrapped present out and handing it over before he could miss his chance a second time.
"Thanks, Ranchan! I'm surprised you even remembered, considering what all's happened to you I mean. At least you shouldn't have to work quite so long tomorrow. The mall's only open til ten at night on weekdays. They won't work you much past business hours I hope," consoled the chef, accepting her present without opening it.
Ranma shrugged helplessly at the hopeful assumption. "Maybe, but they don't call it 'magic' for nothing, you know," groused the redhead as their English teacher, Ms. Hinako, finally remembered that she had a class to teach.
