He had, however, left a few things different. Just a bit.
Universes normally split and remerged with near universes on a regular basis. The classic example of this was looking for one's car keys and searching all over for them, only to find them finally in the first place one had looked. There were other examples, of course, that was merely the most common.
In most cases of truly divergent universes, changes backtracked. A loophole that wizards like those of Spells R Us normally exploited. There were only 10500 universes in a branch, after all. Merging and splitting, but of a constant number if one were to count them. It was also, for those interested in time travel, one of the things that avoided paradox effects. Killing one's grandfather most often just switched the grandfather, which usually would be revealed as some paperwork snafu somewhere down the line. Messing things up required quite a bit of effort.
Which was what Ranma had done.
Now there had been a guy named Billy Batson who had met this nice wizardy sort of fellow and ended up as one of several marvelous hero types over in the United States back in the 1930s and 1940s. Captain Marvel himself retired in the 1960s, mainly because he was seen as part of the Establishment by drugged out rebels who'd never met the guy. He was a square and he was the "man."
Ranma had rewound time. Now he had just gone after an Ultimate Technique instead of some lame training ground named Jusenkyo. Thanks to this old wizard in a cave, who frankly had gotten out of the United States because the whole "Me" generation and "self-centeredness as a virtue" concept sat very poorly with him, Ranma had only to say something to transform into a superpowered individual.
