Baka Rangers: Ninja Reflections [Episode 209950]

From time to time I amuse myself by observing those around me. Since those around me usually consist of four very... individual individuals, this is quite entertaining. Seeing what they get up to on days like today, I really do doubt their sanity some times. But then again, we are a team of magical girls recruited to protect innocents and destroy monsters, so maybe sanity is a bit much to expect?

As a group we don't really have an official name. We call ourselves Rangers, because it was that or some flowery girly name, and Asuna put up a fuss. It didn't hurt that it took us so long to decide on a name that our class was already calling us the Baka Rangers when we finally picked. Maybe we should have waited until we'd woken up a bit more on that one. Still, no take backs.

I've put some thought into why we were the ones chosen too. I haven't come up with anything reassuring. Right now, the most likely idea is the fact that should one of us just disappear one night, there wouldn't be many questions asked. As far as I can tell, none of actually have family's to go back to. The Mahora Principal is notorious for being kind to orphans. I've never actually had the heart to ask, but I think the five of us are all beneficiary's of that policy.

My own parents died so long ago I don't remember what having them around was like. It's hard to miss something you never really had. That doesn't mean I never wonder, but it doesn't really get me down. Yue lost her Grandfather not to long before this started. I think he was her guardian. Asuna never mentions her parents, though she's said a few times she hasn't left Mahora city in years. Ku Fei gets touchy whenever Mothers or Fathers day rolls around. And as for Makie... She never lets anything show. I worry about her some days. Everything we've been through, and yet she's never stopped smiling, even when she got her arm broken. I doubt it's healthy.

So a mismatched band of orphans get super powers, along with a bunch of magical restraints which prevent us from, amongst other things, telling anyone we have said super powers, and get sent off to fight Core Beasts with no reason or instruction. It was incredible that we didn't all end up dead the first night, really. And then the second night, and the third, and so on. We've had to fight every night since then. There's always something out there, though occasionally you'll get a night like last night, when there's only one.

We tried to get some answers once, tried to quit. Fifteen people died. We only tried once. Core Beasts don't care if we show up or not, they just cause destruction. We don't know what they really want, their true purpose, and the ones in charge aren't telling us. Hell, they don't tell us anything. Can you see why I'm so sure of the reason we were picked?

I think we've gotten used to it though. Right now Makie is trying to convince Asuna that Paris is a city somewhere in Alaska for some reason, Yue is looking torn between correcting them and letting herself be entertained, Ku is trying to size up the competitors in the fight we're going to see. It's a habit of hers, we all know Yue picks the winner almost every time. Something about how her weapon works. It's made us quite a bit of money when we get the chance to use it. Sure, it may be cheating, but after all we've been through, none of us care. We ought to get something back, right?

Makie and Asuna are arguing now. Apparently Asuna can buy Paris being in Alaska, but not Amsterdam because she knows that's a state in America. I suspect lack of sleep isn't the only reason those two are in the Baka Rangers. Yue's trying not to choke on her juice. Maybe I should lend a hand?

“Isn't Amsterdam near Denmark?” I ask, wading into the conversation.

“Exactly! See, Kaede knows what I'm talking about!” Asuna crows in triumph.

Uh, I think you may have got the wrong idea...

“No way! Kaede-chan, come on, everyone knows it's cold in Amsterdam!” Makie cries, waving her arms at me.

Um...

“So? It's cold in America!” Asuna again.

But the thing is...

“But it's colder in Alaska!” Makie, and that was just dumb.

“Aren't they both in Africa though?”

Now they're both looking at me like I'm the idiot, and juice is coming out of Yue's nose. Was I wrong?

“Nuh uh, everyone knows Africa is really, really hot. That's where all the deserts are and stuff.” Makie shows her true, traitorous colours as someone who actually does know something about geography. Asuna is nodding along to. How can they both know that? I never heard.

Guess I belong in the Baka Rangers too, huh?
