“All right, the source of the interference should be right around here,” the nameless girl said moving around Tatsuki’s Room like she was trying to find a signal for her cell-phone.
“Excuse me,” Tatsuki said trying to capture the attention of this stranger who decided to barge into her home unannounced, through a second floor window of all places, and didn’t even have the manners to explain her actions to the room’s lone occupant.
“I still don’t understand, just what could be putting out this much interference to be blocking my signal,” the stranger said still contemplating her cell-phone.
“Excuse me!” Tatsuki said for a second time trying to get this intruder to notice her, while getting noticeably annoyed.
“They can’t just disappear like that without leaving a trace,” the girl asked herself oblivious to her surroundings.
Of course she didn’t remain oblivious for long as Tatsuki clamped onto her ear pulling her downward and of course catching her attention, “You have some nerve to come barging into someone’s home like this without having the manners to explain yourself, now if you don’t give me a good reason for just what you are doing here I’ll be escorting you out personally.”
“What? Do you mean you can actually see me!?!” the girl asked in shock.
Seeing that this might take a while Tatsuki let go of the girl’s ear, and sat down, “Okay now that we’ve established that you are visible, heck I saw you earlier today fighting some kind of monster in the cemetery, so can we just sit down have a nice discussion on why you’ve seen fit to invade my home?”
“Um, sure,” the stranger said as she sat down somewhat embarrassed and perturbed at the way that she was just treated, but since this human was seeing fit to let her explain her actions of trespassing she should probably let it go. Of course if she tried to rough her up again, she’d regret it for as long as she would let the girl remember.
“Alright,” the girl said “for starters I am a Shinigami, an agent of the Soul Society in the Afterlife. My duties are to deal with the spirits that remain here in the living world; however what most humans don’t know you see is that spirits are divided up into two types Wholes and Hollows.”
“Wholes are the ghosts that you and those who are sensitive enough to spirits, likely see every now and again.”
“And let me guess,” Tatsuki interrupted, “Hollows are creatures like that monster that I saw you take out at the cemetery, as well as the one that flew the coop after he saw what you did to his friend.”
“You are correct,” the Shinigami continued, “in fact the two duties of a Shinigami are to guide Wholes to the Soul Society through the act of Konsou, and the other is to hunt down Hollows and eliminate them.”
To tell the truth Tatsuki was actually starting to find this interesting, after all how many people got to hear a lecture on part of the workings of the afterlife from someone who was a part of the process, even if said lecture included visual aids that looked like they were done by a little kid too young for Grammar School. However she heard something that took her focus away from the lecture; the same kind of agonizing howling that she heard from the hollow at the cemetery.
“Now my problem is that the Hollow that managed to escape me at the cemetery seems to be eluding my tracker only giving of a faint trace every once in a while,” the Shinigami continued oblivious to the murderously hungry howling, “the problem is that there would have to a high concentration of spiritual pressure nearby to confuse the sensors in my tracer.”
“Shinigami-san,” asked Tatsuki with a voice full of worry, “do you have a hearing problem?”
“What? How dare you?” the Shinigami starred at Tatsuki with barely contained rage, “What did I do for you to say something so callus?”
“I was asking because I can hear something that sounds just like that Hollow from this afternoon,” Tatsuki said growing nervous, “and from the sound of things its close and it’s hungry.”
“What I don’t hear anything, you must be imagining things.” the unnamed Shinigami proclaimed before she heard a bone-chilling roar and grew pale. “What the hell, how did the Hollow get this close without me hearing it?”
“Hell if I know, I just hope that it doesn’t decide to come here,” Tatsuki wished deep down.
“Unlikely,” the Shinigami stated as she stood up and sharpened her senses to try and perceive just which direction the Hollow was coming from, “a place with both a Shinigami, and someone with enough reishi to see them, it’s a meal far too tempting to pass up. What’s weird is that I can barely perceive your reishi at all, it’s like something’s either suppressing it or somehow you’re able to conceal it.”
Suddenly a crash was heard downstairs, and the two of them raced down to find...
