“Hey, Doc! Do you do this a lot?” Ranma wondered.
“What?” the Doctor asked, just a little bit distracted. “Save worlds from alien invasions? Rescue civilisations from collapse? Travel the universe in search of–”
“I mean running?” Ranma clarrified. “You’re pretty good at it.”
“Oh, that. Yes! There’s lots of running involved. Always running! Why; do you have a problem with that?”
“Nah. It’s good for your health. Lots of cardiovascular excersise, burns up carbohydrates, and all that. Also escaping the tankbots is a plus.”
“Right. Less talk, more running.”
“Stop running!” Ranma yelled in a hoarse whisper.
“There are Dalek behind us, Ranma!”
“Yeah, and there are more tank–bots in front of us, Doc.”
“There are Dalek to the right of us,” the Doctor noted on taking a look around.
“There are Da-things above us. You never said they could $#@^& fly!”
“There’s a door to the left,” the Doctor observed, reaching for it. “Locked! Let me get out my—”
BAM! resounded the door as Ranma kicked it in.
“Ah… good door skills,” the Doctor remarked.
“Run,” Ranma breathed. “Just run!”
“What’s all the fuss about these tank bots?” Ranma asked, distracting himself from staring at the interior of the blue box.
“They are called Daleks, Ranma, and they were once the most feared lifeform in the nine galaxies. They have wiped out entire interstellar civilisations.”
“Yeah, but you said there were only a couple of them left. We take them out —bam!— and it’s all over.”
“They will survive! They always survive! I loose everything and they survive! Anyway, they might be vulnerable right now, but that just makes them all the more dangerous! One dalek or one dozen, who knows what sort of diabolical plot their demented minds are hatching? Whatever it is, I guarantee it will be bad.”
“So, its agreed then?” asked the leader of the human–daleks as they strutted down the sidewalk, arms laden with shopping bags. “Our next objective simply must be to raid an icecream parlour. Because, I’m soooooo hungry!”
“Well, that is the price we must pay for leaving the shell,” the former Technician Dalek remarked.
“Yeah, Ami–chan, but then we’d never taste an icecream sundae!” Empress Dalak Usagi drooled. “Intravenious nutrient drip just cannot compare.”
“That is so true!” Dalek Minako agreed. “I am glad we came out of the closet. Let’s hurry! I could exterminate a horse.”
“Last one to the parlor is a rotten Krinoid!”
“WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF THAT?” the supreme dalek demanded while shaking out of the rubble. “THE EXPLOSION DEALT MINIMAL DAMAGE TO OUR SHELLS. WE CAN STILL SALVAGE THE ABANDONED TECHNOLOGY. THIS IS MERELY AN INCONVENIENCE. SO WHY?”
“AIR CRAFT APPROACHING,” the scout dalek anounced. “CIVILIAN DESIGN; IT BARES NO WEAPONS ONLY PRIMATIVE AUDIOVISUAL SURVEILANCE EQUIPMENT.”
“THAT IS WHY,” the supreme dalek decided, seemingly almost pleased to have puzzle resolved. “THE EXPLOSION HAS DRAWN HUMAN ATTENTION. OUR PRESENCE MUST NOT BE REVEALED. INVESTIGATION BY THE HUMANS SHALL IMPEDE ANY ATTEMPTS AT SALVAGE. WE MUST WITHDRAW FROM THE SCENE UNTIL WE CAN ESTABLISH A SECURE BASE AND RETURN IN SECRET.”
“WE CAN EXTERMINATE ANY WITNESSES.” a dalek suggested hopefully. Other waggled their eye scope in agreement.
“WE MUST CONSERVE ENERGY,” the supreme dalek conculded reluctantly. “THIS IS BUT A SMALL DELAY IN OUR PLANS. WE SHALL OVER COME. WE SHALL… WHAT IS THAT SOUND?”
“WARNING! TARDIS MATERIALISING!”
“TIMELORDS,” the supreme dalek hissed. “THEY YET SURVIVE! WE LOOSE EVERYTHING AND THEY SURVIVE! BUT NOT FOR LONG. THEY ARE MOST LIKELY A SINGLE SURVEY TEAM. WE ARE SIX DALEKS AGAINST JUST NINE TIMELORDS.”
“YES,” a dalek remarked hesitantly. “BUT CONSIDER: THIS IS EARTH. IF ANY TIMELORD SURVIVED THE TIME WAR, IT WOULD BE THAT ONE.”
The daleks considered this. Their domes swiveled back and forth as they assessed the probabilities and reached a conclusion.
“WE CAN NOT FACE THE EXTERMINATOR! ESCAPE IS A GOOD PLAN.”
“WE MUST ESCAPE! ESCAPE!! ESCAPE!!”
“THE DALEK DO NOT RUN!” the supreme dalek insisted. “WE DO NOT KNOW THE MEANING OF THE WORD ‘FEAR’.”
“FEAR: A FEELING OF ALARM, APREHENSION, OR DISMAY. A SENSE OF DREAD, SUCH AS IN THE FACE OF IMINENT DEMISE.”
“I STAND CORRECTED,” the supreme dalek admitted. “HOWEVER, IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. WE MUST EXTERMINATE THE DOCTOR!”
“Run,” Ranma breathed. “Just run!”
“EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!!”
