Ayane ‘The Mistress’ Anno rolled her eyes as she watched her faux bodyguard pace back and forth across the locker room floor while she waited for her uncles/butlers to return with Carla’s stage costume that had gotten coffee spilled on it during the ride over. Not that she didn’t understand Carla’s distress. Their mutual friend Luan had only recently awoken from her Monty-induced coma and was still undergoing some graduation exam from her and Luan’s martial arts instructor.
“You know, I brought you with me to get your mind off this test business,” Ayane reminded her. “And if the scenery doesn’t do it, then I guarantee that when you’re getting your butt whooped in the ring thanks to that distraction in your head will. So you’d better focus up Carla.”
The other woman spun around and brought the thumbnail that she had been chewing on for the past ten minutes out from between her teeth. “But we haven’t heard from Luan all night! What if she failed?”
Ayane raised her palms upward and shrugged. “Then there’s nothing we can do about it. So-”
Carla blinked when Ayane’s technological communication box cut it’s owner off and began to sing “ I like to move it, move it. I like to-”
“One second, got to take this,” she apologized before drabbing the singing brick and holding it up to her ear. “Moshi moshi? Ah Ranma-chan!-” was all Carla could make out before her speech became a unintelligible mess of Eastern Ribbon.
When she was finished, Ayane placed the phone back onto the table and Carla looked at her. “Who was that?”
“Hm? I-right, I never told you guys,” Ayane replied. “A little over a month ago I was back in my hometown to help host a little tournament and look at the local talent. There was this one kid named Ranma who was pretty promising so I talked him into entering the local UFF qualifying matches.
“To be honest, I’m trying to get Ranma interested in the UFF. Kid’s too talented to run some stupid dojo like he said he was going to, and…well I doubt he’s going to have much of a life in academics.”
Carla nodded. “So that’s why you came to tonight’s event? To…mentor your beau?”
The question had Ayane’s face twist from slightly reflecting to stuff to strait out WTF. “Wha? Oh no he’s not my-no no, no, don‘t even go there,” she told Carla. “Kid’s a minor, underage, the kind of bait that get people involved in about a billion scandals plus the threat of jail time. That means you no touchy either.”
Ayane understood that Carla and Luan were from some kind of ultra-rural pre-tech land that still considered the crossbow and the catapult something of a technological marvel, and history books said people of such time periods also got bizzzay at a much younger age than what was legally acceptable on Earth. Considering her own early run-ins with the Jade Realm natives, Ayane didn’t want to take any chances.
“Okay, I get it,” Carla said to Ayane as she held up her hands to signal he other woman to stop.
Geeze, I let Luan tell Ayane ONE story… Okay, so maybe she had woken up in with every member of the Western Edge Guard in her bed after the grand opening of Bud the Wise’s great brewery castle, but it wasn’t like those kids of things happened THAT often.
And she hadn’t even done stuff like that once since coming to Earth Realm!
A few seconds later, the door opened and one of the technical crew ushered the familiar boy into the locker room, along with three women that Ayane didn’t recognize. Although, two of them definitely looked like ringside eye candy; so she figured that they were part of Ranma’s attempt to manufacture a proper stage persona.
The other short, flatter woman in the business suit…actually, Ayane hadn’t the slightest clue about that one.
