She'd lost her father, whom she'd managed to connect with in his last days. She'd also lost her grandfather, whom she'd gained some respect for in those final days as he'd turned from his ecchi path to a more spiritual one.
She'd seen him die. She'd held his hand through it as the drugs lulled him into a final sleep rather than the long painful suffering her father had gone through.
"Heed Me," said a voice as an image of a hospital room with a glowing child appeared before her. Facing off against him, and apparently trying to attack him, was HER. The one from the hospital who'd attacked that boy. "I Can Only Access This World Once Every Five Years And Only Through This Child. In The Space Between Universes I Dwell. In That I Saw The Child Once Touched By Great Power And I Saw Possibility. Now Focus, Thou Of This World. Focus On Those Thou Loved. Focus On Those Thou Forgave. Call Them With All Thy Heart And They May Answer.."
Rei Hino fought down her skepticism at a male promise. They couldn't keep them. For just a brief moment, she pictured her old hentai grandfather ogling the shrine maidens and wanted so badly to hear his voice again.
"Right. That'll do it. Hmmm. How odd."
"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!" screamed Rei, leaping INTO the sacred fire for a brief moment before her current predicament fully registered. "YEEEEEEEEEAGHHHHHHHHHH!"
This was followed by her running around most of the shrine grounds with her miko uniform partly on fire.
SPLASH!
Soaked now, and no longer on fire, she eyed her DEAD grandfather with some lack of amusement. "What did you do that for?!"
Lowering the pail, her grandfather merely smiled for a moment. "You're not on fire any more."
"But... you're dead, I saw, I felt," said Rei. "Wait - that boy?"
"Ranma Saotome," said Grandfather Hino. "Yes. An interesting case."
"You look different," said Rei as she took in the fact that her grandfather was ALIVE again and tried to find something safe to focus on.
"One cannot reach the far side of the river without the experience changing you," said her grandfather, still with the faint smile. "There are prices and benefits beyond that."
"What kind of prices?" asked Rei, reaching up her sleeve for some spirit wards.
"All of us who returned, we're more in touch with the spiritual end of things than we might have been previously," answered her grandfather. "All of us are going to be a little less rambunctious too."
"You gave up your ecchiness?!" asked Rei, astounded.
"Yeah, pretty much," said Grandfather Hino. "Now if you don't mind, I'm going to have a lie down. Whew. Want to talk about jet lag?"
Rei twitched a few times as she tried to wrap her mind around things.
Rei twitched some more as her grandfather stopped to talk to those two ravens, and apparently disagreed (politely) with whatever they cawed in reply.
