But then one just had to look at the lovebirds as a couple to see why they were together. Ranma might have been rough and uncultured, but he was a skilled martial artist who could not only figure out fighting styles on the fly, but a deep seated care and concern for those he considered friends. That didn't mean that he was eloquent by any means, but he was just the sort of person you could count on when the chips were down. He just needed someone to guide and care for him, and that was where Tessa came in. She was not only smart enough to handle the academic sort of stuff, but had a tender heart that didn't break down when things got rough. This was a girl who could make hard choices, but could bond with even the boorish boy.
They did make a cute couple, and when Ranma cleaned up, he could even look like he belonged with her. Of course, that was a point to tease him about, but then even he could see that sometimes. It wasn't enough to stop them from being together, and she rather liked what that meant.
At the moment though, she wasn't about to analyze her feelings over it, as she just took it for granted, and understood that her own heart would have never let her avoid making the call.
*"Hello?"* came over the phone line, with that odd tremble that refused to be forceful every time that she heard it.
"Why, hello, my dear Tessa," Nabiki replied, purposely keeping her voice airy as she spoke. "Sorry to bother you, but you might have a little interest in what I've just heard."
*"So I figured that I'd give you a ring and see if you might want to hear it,"* came the middle Tendo's voice over the communication's system.
Tessa wondered what Nabiki would think if she knew that her voice was echoing through the bridge of a submarine, but knew that telling her would be pointless. All that would do would to be tempt the other girl, and although she might not have been the intelligence operative that she sounded like, her friend could cause problems just as well. It was better to let things be and just allow it to be a call between friends.
So, twirling the end of her braid between the fingers of her right hand, Tessa glanced at the icon on the screen indicating the call from Tokyo. "Really? What's that?"
*"Seems my Dad and an old training buddy of his made a promise to marry me or one of my sisters off to this guy's son,"* Nabiki revealed.
"I'd say congratulations are in order... but then I'm not sure how well this could go...."
*"It's not going to happen at all."*
"Oh? You're that aganst it?" the long haired girl asked.
*"Of course. The friend's name is Saotome."*
"Wait. That's...."
*"Exactly,"* came her friend's wry voice. *"Seems that my father and Ranma's were old friends, and made some... 'arrangements' without telling anyone."*
"Oh dear...."
*"But don't you worry. We're not about to steal your husband away."*
"I wouldn't think that you'd be so cruel as to try something like that."
*"Ah, but the kicker is that we're going to make sure that your man can get back to you,"* Nabiki told her friend, sounding amused as she did so.
"You'd try that for me?"
*"Why not? You two are our friends."*
"Nabiki...." Tessa gasped happily.
*"Besides, I know that it'll be better for you to get your studmuffin back as soon as possible. You're always so anxious over your reunions, right?"*
"Uh, Nabiki...."
*"Why, I can remember that time that we all went to the beach. You just had to get that swimsuit so that you could look good for him. Well, you did and he loved it, right? Maybe we should go shopping again. It was so cute the last time, and I can still remember seeing the two of you walking, holding hands, at the edge of the water. It was so cute!"*
Moaning slightly and already wondering why she hadn't taken this call privately, Tessa took one look at the grins from the bridge crew and slumped down in her chair while:
