Smoking Barrel: Creeps Of The Night [Episode 217185]

by Kender

It was supposed to be a simple bounty.

She really didn't have to do it, but Rally Vincent had thought that it would be a good way to get a few bucks on the side. That sort of thing was what she did all the time, and she was damned good at it. So, as far as anyone would have been concerned, she should have no problem with the job.

After all, the guy wasn't even that much of a challenge to get. From his jacket, he was just another street thug who had decided that getting out on bail meant that he was could go head off for the hills. This was depressingly familiar, but it was also an opportunity for her. Getting him off the streets would nab her some spending money, and would get a creep back into the guest quarters provided by the police department. Considering the fact that this guy was also known to be something of a troublemaker, going around causing trouble for all the law abiding people around him, no one was going to complain all that much about her getting him off the street.

So, there she stood, holding her pistol out at him with a smirk on her face, waiting to finish taking this guy down. A few hours of work had allowed her to find this 'tough guy' in the park, and confront him there. About all that hadn't gone as she'd thought it should was the fact that May hadn't listened to her, and was standing on a bench near the walkway, ready to toss grenades at the poor sap. But that was minor, considering the fact that she had him dead to rights.

At least, she thought that she did.

Instead of just turning around as she ordered him to, he seemed to wobble around like a drunkard, which wouldn't have been so bad... until she got a look at his face. His mouth was opened in an ugly snarl was wider than could naturally be seen. Sharp teeth were revealed in that gaping maw, and she didn't think that wriggling tongue was meant to be friendly.

He didn't seem to have the same revulsion that she did, as he let his fingers curl up into a clawing action as he raced towards her. Instinct and experience took over where panic left her conscious thoughts frozen. Her CZ-75 barked several times, with each of the shots tearing right through his chest with the deadly accuracy. However, for all of her talent and ability with a gun, he was still able to not only move with unerring accuracy at her, but didn't seem to be the slightest bit inconvenienced by the bullets. That made the sight of him coming her way even more freaky, and it was already bad enough seeing him bolt in and out of the shadows as he passed under the street lights.

Every survival instinct was screaming at her to get out of there, but Rally found that she couldn't just run out of the area. Besides the fact that this... whatever it was seemed to be damned well predatory, May was still there, which would mean that her friend and partner would likely get toasted by the monstrosity. She was damned if she didn't, and damned if she did, which was screwed either way she went.

Tensing up to defend against possible blows, she tried to be ready to struggle for her life, as she was sure as hell not going to go down easy.

"Forzare!"

Then again, having someone yell out strange words might have cut the tension... if it hadn't been accompanied by a massive blast that sent the man shaped monstrosity flying back the way that he came.

"Well, that shouldn't brighten his day," murmured a male voice.

Rally turned her head just slightly, but it was enough to glance at the tall man in a duster walking to stand near her. "What the hell was that?!"

"That thing? It was.... Wait, you aren't talking about the magic, were you?"

"'Magic'?"

"Yes, 'magic'," he told her, letting one side of his mouth turn up. "But this isn't the best time for explanations. Your pal here seems to want to chat."

"And you are...."

"Harry Dresden," the big man drawled, lifting an engraved staff that she hadn't noticed before, while:
