The news broke at school and spread like wildfire. Ranma Saotome had a job. Unlike other schools, Furinkan didn't have a prohibition against student jobs so that wasn't why everyone was talking about it. No, everyone was talking about Ranma's job because almost no one could believe that Ranma would go and get a job outside of teaching at the Tendo dojo. This wasn't a Ranma's working off a promise at the Cat Cafe or at Uchan's. This was an actual job with a paycheck!
Of course, another big factor driving the rumor mill was the fact that no one actually knew what Ranma's new job was. None of the students could recall Ranma walking into one of the usual teenage places and filling out an application. A few had even doubted that Ranma had a job, but a quick check with Nabiki proved that Ranma was working. This lack of information fulled the rumor mills. Depending on who you talked to Ranma was now anything from a secret agent, the emperor's bodyguard, to the heir of the local Yakuza.
It was at lunch that the school finally got some solid information. Hiroshi and Dasuke walked up to Ranma while the pigtailed boy was eating and said, "Hey Ranma! is it true that you're training an elite squad in the JSDF?"
Ranma looked up at Tweedledee and Tweedledum and said, "No I am not working with the JSDF."
Dasuke then asked, "In that case Ranma, where are you working?"
This was the question that Ranma had been dreading and expecting. Luckily, he had treated it as a martial arts match and gave a slight misdirection. "I'd rather not say. My new employer knew my mother ever since she was born and got me a job as a called in favor. However, I really don't want to annoy my mother and upset her for calling in that favor by having everyone I know drop in on me at work."
The gods must have pitied Ranma because Hiroshi and Dasuke just nodded their heads and accepted what he told them. Those two then spread the news that Ranma's employer was a secret old friend of his mother. Of course that just spurned the rumors to even greater heights. By the end of school some were even claiming that Nodoka had an affair and that Ranma was working under his actual father. None of this reached Ranma's ear because no one wanted to get on his bad side by slandering his mother. After all, Ranma had blown up a mountain.
