Mankind gained the soul, that unclaimed power prized by the already dedicated Powers of the various dimensions. This was because they straddled the line, never racially determined onto any side, even as they evolved from mammals that couldn't decide whether to stay in the trees or not before beginning to make the environment work for them instead. All this was under the watchful eye of the First Soul, the one true God of the Uncertain Worlds. Many names and many motivations were attributed to the Chaos Bringer, who kept the worlds uncertain, denying the Heavens, the Hells, or even the static and uncaring Balance Lords any true dominion. The Chaos cared nothing for all that. All that mattered was retaining the choice for its children.
Janus, to choose a name, watched and only stirred himself to stir the pot. As a result, even the deities that found themselves jockeying for the Uncertain Worlds often didn't know what really ran the show. And one day, a font of Chaos became available through an unsavory but fervent worshiper of his attribute. In that time, Ethan Rayne had come to the weak place in the world, the Hellmouth. There he intended to grant chaos and rampant anarchy by providing costumes that would make those wearing them into their characters, completely out of context.
The group known to themselves and some few of their enemies as the "Scoobies" were all to wear costumes, all to lead the at-risk children of Sunnydale in the celebration that had replaced the solemn rites of Samhain. And every one of them chose anime popular at the time for the theme, once they managed to hide Rosenberg's ghost sheet. This, then, is what happens when Chaos slams many characters into one place with no explanation. Pity the Balance, for it will not stand.
