It was a sunny day in Nerima and Nabiki was enjoying a walk doing what she loved most. Scheming. Granted what she was scheming would probably make those who knew her pause with wonder. She was scheming on what favor she could do for Ranma to get the 10 yen coin from him.
Not that she needed it for anything, but for some reason it felt good when she did something to earn it back. She wasn't sure why, but she was pretty sure it was because it combined two of her favorite past times of scheming and earning money and there was definitely no other possible reason!
The middle Tendo sister smiled as she recalled how she got the slightly bent coin back the first time. It was the morning after the way too successful club rental scheme. She was taking her time getting up as it was the first day of the long weekend for some obscure American holiday. Martin Luke Fawkes day or something.
Furinkan was weird she mused in that when the Principle Kuno was a there then they would follow the American school schedule and holidays. Which meant weekends as opposed to a week off after a month of school and such holidays as Columbus and Thanksgiving. But one couldn't count on those days off because as soon as the Principle Kuno went on sabbatical then the vice principle would switch back to a more traditional Japanese schedule.
While still sleepy, Nabiki noted that she was the last one at the breakfast table. She would have slept in, but she didn't want to risk getting one of big sisters guilt trips of the “Oh sorry breakfast got cold” type. She was pretty sure that big sister didn't mean to mean to do them, well mostly sure. Anyway, during breakfast Ranma wished her a good morning and called her 'Nabs' again or was it 'Nab-chan' that time. Regardless, it reminded her of the fact that Ranma had the 10 yen coin and therefore she owned him a favor. She didn't like owing anyone a favor that she didn't set up in her favor before hand. The question then was how to get it back.
Perhaps he would need help in something. Save him from Shampoo's bike, no, that would mean she would have to keep track of the bike somehow and then have faster reflexes then the death on two wheels. Maybe she could keep him from getting wet from the ladle lady that morning? No, it wasn't a school day so he wouldn't be going toward the high school this morning. Get him an extra helping of rice? No, she was saving that when she wanted to get Akane jealous and an angry Akane wouldn't really get her the small coin anyway. What then? He saw her looking his way and he blinked and offered a small smile back.
“Ranma!” she suddenly said while putting her bowl down. For some reason that easy smile irked her as he was oblivious to the internal strife he was causing her. She didn't care that everybody had stopped eating to look at her when she declared, “I will get the 10 yen coin.”
“Uh. OK here,” her fiance said as he fished it out of a pocket and tossed it to her. She caught it and held the small coin close to her chest while just staring at the pig tailed martial artist. “What's wrong Nab-chan?” he nervously asked after a bit.
“Nothing, I just thought it would be harder to get.” Internally her thoughts raced back and forth. Why did he give up a favor? That didn't balance out. Great now she had to find some excuse to give him the coin back so she could do something for him. Wait, would that mean he was still ahead of the favor game or was she ahead as she got more favors. It just didn't make sense!
Outside the rest of the family wasn't sure what to make of the strange antics of the engaged couple. “Maybe she needed to use a pay phone later today,” Genma finally said to her father.
After that she found a way to get the coin back to him and then something would happen and the coin would come back to her. It wasn't really an exchange of monies in the form of a payment, in the traditional sense. It was more like a private joke, if you will, that they shared when they needed a favor from one another.
So back to how to get the coin back this time.
