And then she met The Boy.
(Help me! Oh, kindly maiden, please, please help a poor baku in need...)
Tendo Akane blinked, looking at the hazy mist swirling all around her.
"Huh? I thought that I'd gone to bed...?... Hey! Who's talking? Is anybody there?"
(Here, here...)
Akane peered into the mist. There was a very strange-looking critter sitting there, looking at her plaintively with it's large snot caught in something that looked like a big pot.
"...Oh, you poor thing. What happened to you?"
Akane said, drifting over to the strange furry creature.
"Well, I'm a baku, so I'm supposed to go around eating dreams, but..."
"Oh!" Akane said, breaking the pot with a quick chop and taking the shards off it's snot.
"You eat dreams, huh? - But how does that work? Wouldn't people get upset if their dreams are gone all of a sudden?"
"Not most of the time -" The baku yawned, licking it's snot. "Most people are producing new dreams all the time, so if we don't eat the old ones and make space sometimes, everything gets all crowded and stuff. Dreams can go bad if you keep on holding on to them too hard when you really don't need them anymore, so... See? This one, for instance... It's not really bad yet, but..."
The baku patted the shards of the broken pot.
"Daddy, daddy! I want to be a strong Martial Artist! The strongest!" Small Akane twirls about the Dojo.
"Oh, Akane..." Papa laughs, while Mama and her Neesans both watch.
"Then I could be the strongest Magical Girl of all! Right?"
Papa faceplams, while her Mama giggles...
Akane blinked. "Oh. Oh! This one's one of my dreams??"
"Yup! Well, as I said, you'd pretty much outgrown that one - this one's the newest replacement for that one, I think..."
The baku pointed at another pot that had seemingly appeared from nowhere. Akane gingerly touched it.
"I want to keep up with my Martial Arts skills, but I don't want to become like Ranma or Uncle Genma...School and my friends and stuff are important to me, too! And anyhow, Ranma is probably going to be the Heir to the Anything Goes whatever happens, so..."
"Yup, that sounds about right." Akane said, smiling.
"I thought so." The baku smiled, yawning. "Thanks for helping me out there, Miss. And if you'd let me give you a little gift for being so kind to me...?"
"Huh?" Akane thought about it. "A gift?"
"Yes, here..." The baku gave her a small ribboned box. "If you open this box in your dreams, you'll be able to see a bit of lives of other versions of yourself, in other worlds!"
Akane blinked. Other versions of herselves in...other worlds? Huh.
"Oh. That sounds interesting..."
"Ha ha, I thought you'd think so. Thanks again, Miss! I have to be going now, so..."
The baku waved, already fading away. Akane waved back, then looked at the box in her hand.
What a weird dream this was...
