Kurama, aka Shuichi Minamino, handed his mother the acceptance letter and waited for her to look over it, then pass it to her husband, discuss it amongst themselves for a few moments as if he wasn’t sitting just across the table from them, and then turn to regard him while trying rather horribly to hide their confusion and slight disappointment over his choice. Finally, she asked what Kurama knew was coming.
“Why this school?”
“Various reasons,” Kurama assured her. “I took a look at it online and asked around, the pamphlet we got really didn’t do it justice.” There were other reasons of course, the main one being that it was a long ways away from this place. Unlike the majority of his comrades, most of whom were still in the demon realm, Kurama’s spiritual energy attracted demons whether he went around using it or not. He couldn’t expect to watch over three people like he had with his mother the past year.
Then there was the fact this particular institute was more to his style, a little off the beaten norm. Being a demon in a human world got to be very boring and annoying after a decade and a half of staying in the same place. Kurama needed something different, or he was pretty sure within a few weeks he’d transform into his full demon self and slaughter several thousand people.
The rest of dinner was uneventful, a few words were spoken here and there about the usual things, how everyone’s day was and so forth, but no other mention was made about the high school. When everyone had finished eating, Kurama quickly went to his room while the younger Minamino headed to the living room for video games.
Shiori simply went sat in the dining room and continued to look over the letter. She knew that her son was much more capable than most children his age, the fact he was able to get an all expense paid vacation that Shiori could never hope to afford was proof of that, but having a son move out right when he was starting high school was a little unsettling.
Then again, if she did forbid him from going what kind of message would that send? What kind of damage would it do? Shuichi was very capable for his age, she reminded herself. He had been difficult as a young child, but those days were long since past. Would telling him to go to another school harm the boy’s faith in himself?
What about her? Why was she doing this? Shiori didn’t consider herself to be too overbearing or overprotective, but… she did call almost every day while he had been gone during summer vacation and during her honeymoon.
Shuichi had been growing more distant from her lately too. He would answer her questions when she asked, but apart from telling her a bit about his day, Shiori really didn’t know that much about her son’s social life. There was that one friend of his she met while in the hospital, but she couldn’t even remember the boy’s name… had Shuichi even told her?
Shiori tilted her head back and sighed. Shuichi was a strait A student and in the top of his class, he didn’t drink or do drugs, she had never gotten a bad report from his teachers, nearly everyone would have considered him to be the perfect son. All he was lacking was a part-time job to pay the bills.
Was that it? Was the only reason she could find to try and keep him at home Shuichi’s lacking fiscal responsibility?
Then again, there had been that vacation he’d managed to get her. So that excuse was quickly shot down.
Maybe it was just the place he’d chosen. From what she had seen, the school wasn’t something Shuichi would have gone for. Although, he apparently saw something in it Shiori didn’t. Just what kind of place was…
