However, in other timelines...
Earth was pretty and blue, with hints of swirling white and brown and green, hanging in space like a jewel. Only part of the major Colony Clusters - L1 to L5 - were visible from here, but that was all right. Everybody here knew were those were, after all.
The Scientist sighed, looking out at the stars.
At first they had been all separate, all coming from different places and going off into different directions. But then they had come together, one by one, till one day somebody had started calling them the Mad 5, and the moniker stuck, though it had taken a while till a certain somebody admitted that it had.
And them some died and some went away, and others came to - well, not take the missing one's places, not really, but to make new places of their own for themselves besides them.
So it was all right. Even if it wasn't the same.
And anyway...they really should have been called the Mad 7 anyhow. Or even the Mad 9 or the Mad 13, depending on how they were counting things. The Mechanic and the Tech should never have been excluded, that was for sure, in this certain Scientist's humble opinion...
And now, it was time. It would be good to hear their voices again - even if it was just for a little while.
So most of the Suits and Pilots were shaping out pretty nicely, even with all the dancing around and around the mulberry bush that was necessary when some of their Esteemed Sponsors were involved. Well good, then - it was nice to hear that at least some of their plans were actually managing to go forward instead of backward. Three steps forward and two steps back were much more preferable to three steps forward and five steps back - or even worse, going sideways and off the cliff, so to speak, after all. And considering all the near misses that they had had in that regard...
Oh, well. Sometimes, people just had to remember what was important and carry on, that was all. It wasn't like there was anything else they could do, ultimately, after all.
"So, pretty much the biggest problem in the here and now is..."
"That, yes."
" - Well, there is always the option of actually going ahead with - that person - I suppose...?"
"Oh, please, no. Do you have any idea - "
A burst of static.
"Perhaps - a pickup of sorts could be arranged? If push comes to shove, I - could - "
The Scientist sighed as another burst of static interrupted their communications, thinking about the logistics of trying to ferry a Very Big Battlesuit down to Earth. Well, things could be arranged if necessary, probably, but -
"And anyway - there is a person that I've - been keeping my eye on, so to speak..."
Hmmm. Now, that sounded interesting...
