"What are you?" Anara asked cautiously, sitting up. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, as I said, I am Kodachi Saotome," she said. "The Black Rose and most sophisticated of my sister wives. With me, on this little expedition of exploration, is my husband, Ranma Saotome...who I might add, is currently the only one of us ready to fight at the moment."
Exploration.
Anara thought about that, another people displaced by this demon war landing on our shores.
"How is it you speak my people's language?" Anara asked.
"Well, I spend most of my time on other lines of knowledge, but I have learned a few odd prayers and spells for utility purposes," Kodachi explained in a needlessly wordy manner.
She looked over the...woman's shoulder and spidery form to the man at the camouflaged entrance.
"Your husband is human?" she asked.
In addition, he was unarmed, and Anara could see no weapons of any type throughout the cavern. Nor any armor. The young man couldn't have been more than an adolescent by human standards, though he sat with an innate grace that she'd rarely seen in the younger race.
Kodachi looked toward him and smiled as if she was having a private joke and then looking back.
"Not all of us look like me," Kodachi admitted.
"And what race are you?" Anara asked. "We've never encountered anything quite like you, aside from the Nerubians."
"Yes, we've already met them," Kodachi noted distastefully. "Most disagreeable people. They seem to enjoy arranging mass funerals. As for our race, we call ourselves kumojin. I am what is known as a drider, my husband is an arachnae. Now, perhaps you can tell me something. What is the situation in that city you were so decoratively overlooking a few short days ago?"
Anara flinched. Diplomatic, this woman was not.
"A human sorcerer," she spit the second word out in distaste. "And some followers no better than bandits."
"I see, rogues of some sort," she said before turning back toward the young man named Ranma and speaking some of their language for him that probably related to what she had just learned.
The response was the same language back, with a bit harsher tones and attitudes.
"What did he say," Anara asked.
"Nothing that bares repeating by civil tongues," Kodachi said. "Well, come night, we'll see about leaving this less than fine establishment."
