Not that he'd wanted to take this as his spot to sleep, but all the other bedrooms had been co-opted by the teachers for their own use. The thing was that, no matter how he tried to force himself to go with his annoyance, he couldn't bring himself to dislodge them from their rooms. Certainly it was technically his house, but he'd been through one time of having them leaving him totally alone, and the isolation that he'd felt then wasn't something that he wanted to go through again. Besides, it was nice to have them around him, and he rather liked knowing that he could tilt his head in a general direction and know where they were.
Though, if that government guy was to be believed, then he wouldn't have to worry about that again. To be able to keep these women in his house was important to him, and he damned well didn't want to mess that up. So much was riding on this, and there were so many ways for it to wrong. Hell, he didn't even know if this guy was actually on the level in the first place. All that he knew, the guy could have been pandering to his fears just so that he could screw him and the teachers over.
If that was the case, he didn't know what he would do. Whatever happened to him wouldn't matter, so long as he could protect them. After all, what sort of man would he be if he let something happen to those he cared about, especially the woman that he loved. Causing them grief would go against all that he held dear, and he wasn't about to let himself fail that spectacularly. Tightening one hand so hard that his knuckles hurt, he whipped out his fist and smacked it right into the cushions of the couch.
At which time he heard the creak of the floorboards and noticed the shadow in the light of the doorway. Twisting around, he looked over at the new arrival and let his eyes go wide as he saw who was there.
"Couldn't sleep, could you?" Mutsuki asked softly as she clasped her hands to her pajama clad chest.
Chitose blinked in surprise for a moment before clearing his throat noisily. "Well, it's not like I'm doing anything weird...."
"I know that. You were worrying about us."
"Ahh... umm.... Why would would think something like that?"
"Because I know you, and you care about us more than you let on."
"Yeah, like I wouldn't!" he snapped. "We're talking about my family here, and you're...."
"And I feel the same way."
"I... I know. It's just... how do we know that he isn't going to screw us over."
"We don't," she murmured, taking his hand into her grasp. "I don't know, and I really wish that I could."
"Me too. I just... Wait. Does that mean that you couldn't sleep either?"
"Is that strange? I mean, someone has to worry about you, and I have more of a reason... Chitose?"
Taking her into his arms, he gave a heavy sigh. "No, you don't. You shouldn't have to be scared at all."
"That's...."
"What?"
"Just like you. It's just like you," Mutsuki murmured and leaned in to hug him back.
Closing their eyes, they held their embrace in that silence, letting their world being the two be solely together.
Unseen by the couple, Satsuki grinned as she crossed her arms over her chest and leaned against the wall outside the living room. "Looks like those two don't need us to speak up."
"They really are having a special moment, aren't they?" Yayoi softly asked.
"It's so cute," Uzuki whispered and let her drawing hand flex unconsciously. "I've got to get to my pad before I miss the chance to get this down!"
Kisaragi merely crouched down and watched the pair hugging while:
