"Okay," said Ranma, figuring this would be his big chance to see what he was supposed to be doing. "I'd rather just hit him again."
"You musn't do that," said Makoto, lowering her voice. "In an official match you might be declared unfit as a Trainer and have your license confiscated. The injured party might demand one of your girls transferred to his team roster as payment even then."
"Oh," said Ranma, frowning but willing to go along with this. For now.
Asuka bounced to position at the far end of the court, took her two axes out, and then began a few trial swipes.
"Okay, when does this start?" asked Ranma, raising his voice to near-shout across the ring at Shinji.
"Now!" said Shinji. "Asuka, go! Close and Rage!"
"Baka," said Asuka, charging across. "I need a trigger for Rage, you idiot!"
"Ok," said Ranma. "Counter her attack and, uh, immobilize her."
"Right," said Makoto, charging forward.
Asuka began swinging her axes before she was even close, apparently building up speed.
Makoto's hands flashed through a quick set of motions and left glowing green trails. "Entanglement!"
"WHA!" Asuka managed as roots shot out of the ground to grasp at her. She had to come to a halt to try and chop away those grasping roots.
"You mustn't run away, Asuka!" called out Shinji. "Cut yourself loose."
Asuka muttered something uncomplimentary as she began slicing through the roots that were still squirming around and doing a good job of tying her down.
"Now, Makoto, attack," called out Ranma, analyzing the move himself. "Let me see what your best is."
"Saotome Style." Makoto leapt into the air, one fist pulled back. "Special Attack." Electricity crackled.
"No, wait!" said a panicked Asuka as she tried to free herself with her axes but not lop off anything she might need later.
"Asuka! Axe Throw!" called out Shinji.
Ranma watched, fascinated, as Makoto finished her attack by landing with a punch coming at the end of an overhead arc. Overly showy, true. Easy to dodge if your opponent was not rooted to the ground, also true.
Asuka being hit with what had to be a considerable amount of force and getting electrified at the same time, while being unable to roll with the impact due to the roots tangling her not having THAT much stretch to them?
Asuka sagged as the roots continued to grip and hold onto her, her thrown axe only a couple of feet away.
Ranma decided something needed to be said. "Good combo, Makoto. What would you have done if the roots hadn't grabbed her though?"
"If my Entangle hadn't worked, I would have used a Grand Thunder Dragon if she was off-balance," said Makoto. "Failing that, I would have thought of something."
Ranma nodded. No, he had no idea what a 'Grand Thunder Dragon' was. Though he was guessing it was another lightning-based attack.
