Demon Japan: The Marduk Reporters [Episode 223799]

"Okay, what have we got so far?" asked Fuyutsuki as he looked around the table. Some of those addressed were physically present, while others were only virtually present through electronic connections.

"As far as manifestations - Elementals are the most common," said Doctor Naoko Akagi. "Able to use magic or something like that along a particular elemental line. Second most common are Psychics and Sensors."

"Not counting those with Familiars as they tend to be a subset of Elementals," said another of the scientists.

"As far as monsters are concerned, SERA has had to drastically revise their rankings of them," put in Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu who was teleconferenced in. "The old system became completely screwed up with the addition of the Familiars."

"We have our own manifesters, of course," said Doctor Akagi. "Gehirn has done quite a job with causing people to seek to disprove the existence of the Zone - resulting in a large number of orphaned children who have been in contact with the fog. I've prepared a partial listing."

Doctor Akagi grimaced as the first photo came up. "Shinji Ikari. Experiment P2 resulted in an artificial Familiar, a sort of penguin dubbed 'Pen-Pen' as a result. After testing both of them in the Zone, Shinji manifested a second Familiar - Rei. Shinji has shown no manifestation of elemental magic or esper ability so far. Pen-Pen has shown minor Ice element properties. Rei, on the other hand, has Force element.

"Usagi Tsukino," continued Doctor Akagi as she clicked to the next picture. "Light element manifestation. Her Familiar is a black cat named Luna. Minako Aino - also Light element and with a white cat named Artemis. Why cats are associated with Light magic is yet another nonsensical thing about magic."

"No shortage of THOSE," remarked Kyoko Zeppelin-Soryu.

"Indeed," muttered most of those assembled.

"What about your daughter," asked Doctor Akagi. "Asuka is of the right age, is she not?"

"Three exposures so far, results have been less than encouraging," admitted Professor Soryu.

"You yourself were exposed twice, were you not? Are you quite all right?" asked Doctor Akagi.

"I'm perfectly fine," said Professor Soryu, keeping most of the snarl off her face and out of her voice. "There is no problem at all."

Her name. Her name was something.

No, she was Asuka. Asuka Langley. Asuka Langley SORYU damnit.

She was not a doll. She was the six year old daughter of Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu. She was human.

Curled up in a corner of the room, she tried to ignore the whispers from the shadows. The whispers that spoke of her as a doll, a plaything, just a little more complicated than the ragdoll of fluffstuff she'd owned once upon a time.

She would not give in. She would not give up.

Even if her Mommy wasn't really her Mommy anymore. Just something that wore her face. It had everyone else fooled but not her.

Dear Ranma,
How are things going at your end? Well, I hope. I hope we can spar when we meet again so you can show me what you've learned at that Chinese village of martial artists.

I've been learning some martial arts here. My sensei says I have a natural gift for it. I'm mainly studying kenpo and shotokan karate.

My sensei's name is Gouken, who moved into Juuban in order to measure his strength against some of the monsters then moved away again when the SERA people set up this 'grace period' that everyone's talking about. He's very strong.

My magic is coming along well too. I can throw lightning bolts, and my aim is improving. It takes a lot out of me right now though.

Looking forward to seeing you again.

Makoto Kino.
