Stepping back, she looked down at her watch and impatiently counted off five minutes, then stepped back to the door and repeated her measurement.
Turning around, the middle Tendo paled—she’d lost a full inch. But it’s been over a full hour! her mind shrieked. Why … Glancing down at her watch, she waited until another five minutes had passed, then stepped back to the door and measured herself again — another inch and a half gone, it was accelerating!
Instantly, she was out the door and down the hall to Akane’s room. Throwing the door open, she rushed to the bed and shook Miyo awake. As the still sleep-fogged girl looked up at her in confusion, she pulled her out of the bed and to her feet—she seemed to be the same height she should have been, she was shrinking, too.
Grabbing Miyo’s arm, she pulled her out of the room and down the hall to the stairs, shouting for everyone to head to the family room as soon as the two reached the first floor.
Shoving a now badly frightened Miyo toward the family room, Nabiki ran toward the dojo, finding Akane and Ranma there with their homework spread out around them.
“What’s up?” Ranma asked, the two looking up as Nabiki burst into the room.
“Come on, to the family room, I’ll explain to everyone there,” Nabiki gasped out, and Akane and Ranma looked at each other, shrugged and got to their feet, then found themselves running to catch up with Nabiki again.
“So, Nabiki,” Kasumi asked with a very slight frown, “what was so important that it couldn’t wait until I finished the dishes? It gets harder to clean when they dry, you know.”
“It’s Miyo’s disaster,” Nabiki said urgently, “I think I know what it is — we’re shrinking.”
“Well, in that case it isn’t much of a disaster,” Genma harrumphed. “From the way you acted, I though something serious was happening.”
“Really?” Nabiki asked. “And when does it stop?” Walking over to the naginata hanging on the wall, she tossed it to her father. “Dad, does that seem like it’s the right size to you?”
Soun held the naginata up straight and frowned. “No, it isn’t,” he replied thoughtfully. “It’s at least a foot too long.”
“Thought so,” Nabiki said, then, with a glance at Nodoka added, “but the Saotome honor blade looks like it’s still the right size, compared to Auntie Nodoka—items we’re wearing must be shrinking with us. Kasumi, head to the kitchen, get all the knives you can. We’ll pass them out to everyone.”
Kasumi nodded without a word and disappeared into the hall, and Nabiki turned back to the others.
“Now, everyone, sit down in a circle and hold hands. Like I said, I don’t know how far this will go, and we need to be able to stay together.”
Ranma rolled his eyes, but Akane poked him in the ribs. “I think it’s a great idea, come one!”
Kasumi rushed back into the room, saw what the rest were doing, and with a nod passed out the knives she had brought and sat down between Miyo and Nabiki.
For a few minutes nothing seemed to happen, and Genma shook his hands free. “This is ridiculous!” he growled, and started to stand up when suddenly Nabiki felt as if the world had flipped over and she was staring up at the floor. Then, everything started to rotate and wobble. Quickly, she closed her eyes and tightened her grip on Kasumi and Nodoka, heard what must have been Genma hitting the floor, felt Nodoka pulling away, and everything went white.
