Mischief Fragment: Curses! [Episode 226907]

"One of the guys on the ship was saying..." said Naruto as he walked down the plank onto the thankfully solid and unmoving docks of this port city.

"Yes?" asked Jiraiya, looking over the city himself. He was more familiar with it though, so in HIS case it was keeping an eye out for trouble.

Naruto's gaze swept the city, but it was more an effort to take it all in. "Uhm. That I should send Hinata gifts every so often. That maybe she'll hesitate before she..."

"Does something nasty to you?" asked Jiraiya. "Hmmm. I can see a couple of problems with that, but I think I can work it into the training."

"Eh? Training?" asked Naruto.

"Sure," said Jiraiya as he chose a direction and started walking. "I've seen your penmanship. You need to work on summoning and sealing scrolls among other things. I can show you how to do messenger toads and you can send things back to the village that way. Very handy technique and an enemy would have trouble intercepting them much less figuring out where you are NOW from those messages. Mind you, you'll have to earn your own money for those things. We'll do it at the next town. You wouldn't want to buy ANYTHING here."

"Who designed this place anyway?" asked Naruto. "There's a purple tower there next to a buncha tents."

"Konmei was not designed, no city planners as such," said Jiraiya. "People grabbed land and have held it for centuries, and as long as they have someone there at all times - nobody else can claim it. The areas with the tents are subject to change regularly, the permanent buildings are more durable. Though the rains here can be pretty fierce, so no matter how short a time they plan to stay there - shelter becomes a priority."

"Oh?" asked Naruto, craning his neck to look at something.

"Now remember, don't touch anything, don't buy anything, don't talk to anyone," said Jiraiya.

Silence.

"Oh hell, don't tell me," said Jiraiya as he came to a stop. Sure enough, he was alone.

You didn't need to be a Sage to see this would be trouble.

Several hours had passed since Jiraiya had found Naruto and left the city.

Naruto was sulking.

Jiraiya sighed. "Well at least it wasn't one of the instantly-fatal curses."

Naruto grumbled.

"Did you at least learn that maybe a little caution might help you out in the future?" asked Jiraiya.

Naruto grumbled some more.

"Of course, most of the really nasty curses like 'Instant Death' or 'Berserk Until Killed' or 'Doom Of Nakogoth' wouldn't last long," said Jiraiya. "People would gang up on the person selling those things and... well, it wouldn't be pretty. Even Konmei has SOME laws and standards."

Naruto opened one eye and glared at his sensei.

"It's YOUR fault," pointed out Jiraiya. "I warned you on the ship. The lookout warned you. The crewman warned you. I warned you again just before you ran off."

Naruto went back to glaring at the fire.

"This kind of curse can be cured, and we can continue your training while we track it down. It could be a lot worse," said Jiraiya. "After all, it's just-"
