Rei Ayanemi was drifting in a sea of LCL blankly looking up at the cloudy sky. She didn't know why she was in the vast ocean of LCL; she didn't even know how she got there in the first place. Although she didn't show it, Rei's mind was racing as she tried to sort out everything running through her head. She could remember both of her deaths, well three if you count her assimilation into Lilith as a type of death.
Just as Rei recognized her third "death", her mind faced an onslaught of disjointed images. The images were too much and past by too quickly for Rei to really take note of them, but she got the distinct impression that these images were real. It was strange, but she could feel as if she had already experienced what she saw, but at the same time she had never experienced these things. There was no way that she had ever gone break dancing, stared in a kabuki play, climbed to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, or had been involved in a three-way. It just didn't make any sense. Why was she seeing these things?
Suddenly, Rei felt a pair of delicate, and yet strong, arms scoop her up. The First Child immediately turned to look at who could be carrying her and found herself staring at a cheerful female face. Once Rei got over that, she noticed that whoever was carrying her was also flying over the sea of LCL. Gendo might have taught Rei to suppress her emotions, but her muscles still instinctively tensed at the completely unexpected sight.
"Don't worry Rei," the woman carrying the blue haired teenager said, "I won't drop you. By the way, I'm Belldandy." Rei didn't reply to Belldandy, but instead silently watched her 'savior'. Eventually, the duo reached land. Belldandy smiled again and said, "Oh good, it's almost ready."
Finally Rei's need to know what was going on overcame her usual reservations and she calmly asked, "What is almost ready?"
"Why the garden of course." Belldandy replied like she was a mother talking to a child who should have been paying more attention. "That reset of Yggdrasil that SEELE forced caused a lot of problems for us up in heaven." Belldandy then began to frown and her voice got mournful. "To think 3 billion killed because a few men foolishly believed that they knew better then The Almighty. If only we had caught Hagel before she planted those scrolls."
Rei's eyes widened as she listened to what Belldandy was saying. There were only two possibilities before her. The first possibility was that she was hallucinating, but Rei had already discarded that a long time ago. The second possibility was that Third Impact had happened and the results were nothing like anyone had expected. Belldandy had just crossed over onto land in her flight path when Rei spoke. "What's going on?"
Belldandy sweetly answered the troubled young woman she was carrying. "Rei, do to what has happened, the Earth has been returned to its primordial state. Originally, The Almighty gave the Earth to Lilith to spread life. Lilith doesn't exist anymore; she, Adam, and all of there creation have been erased. All except for you Rei. During Third Impact, you were at the heart of the system reset absorbing everything that Lilith did as well as Lilith herself. You are now the Angel of the Black Moon and She-from-whom-all-come-from."
