Two spirits, one body. One bound, a prisoner - this one a spirit of destruction.
The other, someone who'd suffered and prevailed over that suffering.
Memories stirred. There had been a time, long ago, before becoming a weapon. A time when the spirit of the weapon had flesh and had stood upon a world different from this one.
It was now Breaker. A knife and punching weapon combination weapon.
It remembered though. Remembered fighting with a body of flesh against evil, fighting again and again until...
Dying.
Name...
Yes, that was right. His name was Helm.
He'd died fighting Tyr, who had himself been manipulated by Cyric. Now Tyr was dead too.
Still, he was the Guardian, the power that protects. If only that stupid cat had put him in a shield or something more suitable.
Hmmm. Looked like the current Wielder was having a little problem learning how to protect himself. Well, all heroes had to start somewhere.
"Ungh," said Naruto as he finally activated his own bracer.
BOP BOP BOP BOP! went the tennis balls from the launcher to Jiraiya who bounced them to Naruto who then bounced them to Nanoha who bounced them to Jiraiya.
Eventually the launcher ran out of ammunition and an increasing number of the tennis balls lost enough momentum that they simply didn't make the circuit.
Jiraiya smiled. "Well, that was good for now. We'll have to practice using these a little more often."
"I did it," said Naruto, looking down at the bracer as he stopped the trickle of chakra he'd been feeding the thing.
"Yeah, big brother!" cheered Nanoha.
"Worked up a sweat with that," said Jiraiya. "Come on, I think I saw one of those 'vending machines' that sells ice cream..."
Nanoha AND Naruto cheered this time.
"It's still not moving from the tunnel," noted Kiba. "How can we get it out?"
"Wurf!" said Akamaru, who calmly walked up to the stone golem and pissed all over one foot. Then RAN.
Still silent, the golem charged after the little dog.
"Well, THAT works," agreed Yuhi.
"Shaaaa," said Naruto, sounding contented. "Man, these things are neat."
"Vending machines that dispense ice cream, the ice cream itself, or that someone else is paying for it?" asked Jiraiya.
"Yeah," said Naruto with a grin that only stopped when he bit off another portion of "Orange Ice Dream Bar."
"So where are we going now?" asked Nanoha, taking the occasional nibble of her own striped blue-white bar.
Jiraiya eyed the little girl eating an ice cream bar and reflected that it was VERY hard to keep in mind that Nanoha was actually a constructed life form. "Back to the technowizard. Need to see if he knows exactly what the case is with that trench knife."
"What knife?" asked Naruto.
"The 'rune weapon' that's been on your belt apparently since we left the place," said Jiraiya.
"Huh? WHAT?! How'd THAT get there?" asked Naruto as he pulled aside his jacket to reveal it was indeed there.
"That and we now know for sure that we can activate these 'technowizard' items with chakra," said Jiraiya. "There's something I want to pick up and send to Tsunade as well."
"A gift for granny-Tsunade?" asked Naruto, checking his clothes for any other items that might have mysteriously appeared.
"Yes, she's a medic-nin primarily, Hokage is simply her job at the moment," said Jiraiya. "Imagine how some of the medical devices here could help out back there."
"Ohhhh," said Naruto, his eyes flicking towards a passerby who had a gleaming metal arm.
"Then we've got lessons later this afternoon," said Jiraiya.
"More training?" asked Naruto, clenching a fist.
"No, actually all three of us will be taking lessons," said Jiraiya. "Those hovercycles will improve our speed and operating range enormously."
"Well, what are we going so slow for?!" asked Naruto, taking the point position.
"Nanoha," said Jiraiya. "Keep an eye out for something else for Naruto to send to Hinata."
"Right!" said Nanoha. "Leave it to me!"
On entering the cluttered little shop, Naruto and Nanoha and Jiraiya all just stopped and watched for a moment.
"Uhm, what exactly are you doing?" finally asked Jiraiya of the technowizard.
"What does it look like?" asked the technowizard.
"It looks like you're fishing, except for the line going into a hat," said Jiraiya.
The technowizard bobbled the fishing rod a little. "Yup. That's exactly what I'm doing."
"Why?" asked Jiraiya.
"I recently got this, finally figured out how to use it," said the technowizard, "but so far I haven't caught anything."
Jiraiya nodded as the technowizard reeled in the line, a lot more line than one would have fit within the odd cylindrical hat. "I see. Well, we came to try something else. It looks like we CAN use this sort of equipment."
"Any of you want to give it a try?" the wizard asked Naruto and Nanoha.
"Sure, I'll give it a shot," said Naruto, taking the rod and trying to get it working.
A few minutes later he yelped and began reeling in-
