The watching (and somewhat fretting) Tigress blinked as that settled in. "Oh my! I - I never dreamed!"
Soun's reaction was predictable. "Waaaaahhh! My baby Tigress is going to be an Alpha! I’m so happy!"
"Oh- oh my-" said Kasumi, who then realized one of the duties of an Alpha was to protect one's Trainer. Which meant that letting him continue to be strangled by her father was NOT a good idea. KA-THWAM!
"Urk," said Soun before sliding to the ground in a thoroughly unconscious heap.
"Good," said Kasumi's mother. "Now that you're an Alpha, you have to work on your assertiveness. You can't simply ignore problems."
Ranma rubbed his throat and looked down at the limp Tendo patriarch. "Uhm. Right."
Kasumi was big on proper decorum, and she considered Ranma briefly with her head cocked slightly to one side. While she was mostly inscrutable at the moment, her ears and tail flicked around wildly as she considered this development. Then she knelt on one knee, deciding that she should at least go through proper forms. "I accept the position of Alpha and its duties, my Trainer. Together we shall emerge victorious."
"Ah, right," said Ranma, who wasn't big on ceremony. "Good to have that settled."
"Is settled for now," spoke up Shampoo.
"Technically she's right," added Kasumi's mother. "As long as Kasumi does a good job, there may be grumbling about it - but your other pokegirls won't protest. If there are problems such as a string of losses, she'll be challenged."
"Ah, right," repeated Ranma. Not that he had any intention of losing. Heck, he didn't even plan on things remaining like this. All he had to do was 'convince' Hiroshi and Daisuke to turn the Great Will back over to him and he could set everything back to normal. Piece of cake, right?
In the meantime, he'd just enter Kasumi's name as his Alpha on this pokedex-thingie.
"He's chosen his Alpha. Kasumi Tendo. Tigress."
"Ah, good," said Jim, nodding towards Six, a Psychic type. "I think I remember her. Well-rounded skills if a bit vague and wallflower-ish. Could have been worse though."
"Yes, sir, I suspect his rivals will begin attacking any moment," said Six.
"You don't have to be Psychic to see that coming," agreed Jim.
"Your choices for the other positions are also important," instructed Tsuruko. "Nobody really expects you to put together a force that works well together at once. There are Trainers who take years to develop and fine-tune their teams. Others take an approach of constantly shifting the roster around just to keep other Trainers from being able to construct specific counters."
"Most Trainers though," added Cologne, "take a different approach. A core group that remains the same, with some slots shifting from mission to mission. Then there are those, a smaller but still sizable group, who simply retain the same group and work on building up that team."
"Ya make it sound like there's a lot of these groups," said Ranma as he considered the remainder of the slots.
"That's because there are," said Cologne.
"As you'll be participating first in a regional league, to get the preliminaries out of the way," said Kasumi's mother, "perhaps we should look at someone to challenge?"
"Okay," said Ranma, deciding this was like a martial arts duel. Had to prove you could hold your own before going up to challenge the big guys.
"Kuno will likely challenge you the moment he stops running around telling people he's going to introduce you to his 'manly love'," put in Nabiki as she phased through the roof with a smirk.
"Yeah, that sounds... SAY WHAT?!" reacted Ranma.
"Word on the street is that Kuno's going to challenge you for Akane, and will then prove the old samurai-love thing on you," said Nabiki.
"That is SO screwed up," said Ranma, cracking his knuckles and wanting to vent by beating Kuno into a broken heap. He really wanted to release some tension.
"Uh uh," said Nabiki. "Pokegirl battle first. You've got two so far. Who else?"
"Well, uh," Ranma dithered, then turned to Kasumi. "Who do you think should be next?"
"Well," said Kasumi thoughtfully. "I hadn't really considered the possibility of being Alpha, but if I had to choose. Yes, I think that:"
