Hinata blinked her eyes open, slowly turning her head.
There in a chair next to her bed, holding her hand, was Naruto-kun.
"eep," softly said Hinata, thinking that maybe she was still unconscious. This is a dream right?
"Mfff," said Naruto, apparently asleep.
Naruto-kun is... what happened? Why am I here? What's going on?
Hinata wracked her brain. She could remember the past day only vaguely, but she'd -
kissed Naruto-kun on the cheek?
Hinata's face practically glowed red as she remembered that. Being that bold was certainly improper. She'd be lucky if Naruto didn't hate her for being so forward and improper and -
But he was asleep in a chair by her bed in the hospital, and he'd apparently fallen asleep holding her hand.
It was strange, she felt close to him. Closer than she'd ever been.
His hand loosened and started slipping free. Without thinking about it, she tightened her own grip, holding his hand in place. Upon realizing that, she dropped his hand from sheer embarassment.
"Hmf?" asked Naruto, blearily looking around. "Whassat?"
Hinata shrunk back in the bed.
"Hinata?" asked Naruto, coming awake. "You okay? You shouldn't move around too much yet."
"Did THAT boy sneak back in?" asked a nearby voice, followed by the door to the room banging open.
Hinata blinked at the nurse who bustled about the room and looked out the open window to make sure there was no evil fox-boy hiding around there.
"Well, if you're awake, I'll let the ANBU know," said the nurse. "Apparently the Hokage has some questions."
"Judging from the reactions, it was some sort of genjutsu," said Ibiki several hours later. "Or a variant of the Mind-Body Switch jutsu. She honestly doesn't remember details."
"Do we have any idea who initiated the jutsu?" asked the Hokage.
"No," said Ibiki. "Probably a Hyuga, as she demonstrated significant skill in their style of taijutsu. Or, and this seems more likely from my conversation with the Hyuga clan head - the genjutsu's main effect was to bolster the confidence of the girl without direct control over her. The message about the exams was likely the message the genjutsu was meant to relay and everything else was from the confidence boost."
"So that she apparently kissed Naruto Uzumaki on the cheek was on her own volition?" asked the Third Hokage, guessing that THAT at least was as unlikely to be a part of an enemy action as anything else.
"Yes," said Ibiki.
"Keep me posted if anything turns up," said the Third Hokage. "This might be interesting."
