In the far, ancient past of at least one version of Earth, Alexander the great had begun his quest for conquest across the known world. And one of his earliest targets, following the destruction of Babylon, was to Libya, which was the the center of an old matriarchal cult that the misogynist Greeks had successful driven out of their lands in centuries past.
At the center of this cult, was a particular trait passed from mother to daughter. There were some disagreements on the nature of this trait. Some called them demons that needed human males to reproduce, others thought they merely descended from demons. Or else that they trafficked with such creatures and that their abilities were taught rather than inherited.
They were known as "gorgons" and their leader would take on herself the mantle of "Medusa", immortal until such time as her head parted company with her body...not unlike a number of other creatures out there.
Despite their inherent power, they were few in number and Alexander's brilliance and personal power smashed through their protectors and drove him to slaughter every single gorgon....that he could identify.
Numerous girls carrying the bloodline who had either not yet trained to awaken it or chosen not to, where taken up into the growing number of camp women in Alexander's force. From there, they would travel east and be scattered across three continents. They'd be bartered about as slaves, concubines and wives until their thousands of gorgons across the world...most of whom, unfortunately, knew nothing of what they were.
The next girl to take the mantle of Medusa would not be born until the twentieth century. But many teaching amulets had survived, and occasionally one of the gorgons would find such an amulet and awaken their potential.
Toltirr looked through the years and found several girls throughout time that carried the bloodline, but were fated to die young and plucked them out just prior to their deaths and deposit them in the far past of the world of the Five Nations. And arranged to tie that bloodline to the ancestry of one of the several girls Naruto knew.
After which, he took a single teaching amulet and dropped it into Naruto's present, just waiting to see what happened when the girl who didn't realize she was a gorgon finally stumbled onto that amulet.
