There were once two people who, after many adventures and obstacles, came together in the end in a joining of sorts. It might have been love or a family arrangement. It may have been their choice or it may have been something that came out as an accident or a surprise. It may have been the best thing to happen to them, or it may have been the worst ever.
In the wake of this came two children, newborn innocents brought into the world to a new life. Whatever the cause of their parents coming together, life was idyllic for these children. At least one of their parents started the work of raising them, with or without the other, and did all they could to ensure that the life of these innocents was untouched by the vagaries of their own legacies.
The attempt failed.
The parents' legacy came into the lives of the family all too soon, threatening to destroy all. But for the forethought and awareness of the children's family, both parents or one, they would have most likely been caught in the crossfire.
As it was, the parents felt trouble coming and took their children to an acquaintance. Someone unlikely. An old foe that no one realized the parents had settled amicably with. A friend that had been missing for years. People who were supposed to be dead. But, all in all, someone they felt they could trust to protect their children while they dealt with the coming threat.
Only they did not succeed. This time the coming threat was something they were not prepared for. Treachery, betrayal and worse. The people who, til then, had so lovingly cared for their children were dead.
And the chosen guardian was left to raise them and teach them and keep them secret until things could be made right. Until the murderers could be exposed, if their identities weren't already known, or run to ground, if they were fugitives, or otherwise brought to justice.
Because once the murderers were brought to justice, then it would be safe for the children to meet their relatives and the friends of their parents. Then it would be safe for them to be known to the world.
