Mischief Fragment - Mitternacht: Rats, Failure [Episode 234463]

Naruto made a gesture. The staff glittered, forming a rotating circle of symbols that briefly flashed.

The fires stopped, leaving blackened wood and scorched earth behind.

"Prolific Forestation," said Naruto, making another gesture. New trees and underbrush appeared, pushing out of the ground and climbing skyward.

"Okayyyyy," said Kakashi. "I can see where there are some specific missions we can get with this sort of thing."

Naruto walked up to a large rock. "Fabricate." Sitting at the now stone table on the stone bench, Naruto leaned back and considered the three still standing.

"Yes, definitely need some of the repair and maintenance missions," mused Kakashi. "Okay, you two. Begin."

Sasuke discovered, very quickly, that a jonin was a formidable opponent.

You two are going to have to work together, you know.

Sasuke frowned as he leapt back and went to hide. Naruto had just said something in his head?

It's something I learned on Mid-Childa. Unfortunately, I have to look as if I'm doing this paperwork that's just been set down in front of me.

Sasuke frowned as he considered the usefulness of this technique.

Here's my plan.

Sasuke listened for a moment, frowned, and tried to think back at Naruto.

Yeah. I can do it. The only question is can I do it quietly enough that he doesn't notice where it came from, and can one of you fake as if it's your doing.

Sasuke hmphed and formed an image.

Sakura thinks she can do it, but she's not sure she can bring herself to attack Kakashi while it's going off. Seems she's a little squeamish.

Sasuke cocked his head and considered his hiding spot.

No, this is communication only.

Sasuke nodded, then shifted his weight and sprung into action.

Kakashi sighed. He could tell Naruto was doing something. Just from the occasional twitch or reaction, he was guessing something along the line of the Yamanaka silent-communication jutsu. Well, based on what he'd read of Naruto's file - he already understood teamwork and was probably trying to coordinate a plan with the other two.

Whether they went along with it would determine if they had any chance of passing the test.

Ah, here came Sasuke - leaping from the bushes. And, as expected, there was another eruption from a slightly different direction - and Sakura was making several hand-seals that didn't seem to mean anything. He wasn't looking in that direction, as Naruto was behind him, but he could tell Naruto was now moving and had his staff in hand.

RATS?! Over a hundred of them appearing and swarming at him?! Wearing little black ninja night-suits, wielding various ninjato and spears and knives, little red eyes gleaming.

A quick substitution, flash move, and... more rats throwing grapnels and wires?!

"Okay," said Kakashi, a half-hour later. He'd had to admit, he'd actually had to work at avoid being captured/swarmed. Any time it looked like he'd be kept still for a moment, Sasuke had leapt in and started some taijutsu. "This was an unusual showing but I wouldn't call it a success. You ran out of time and failed to get a bell after all."

"Lady Sakura," said one of the ninja-rats, presenting a scroll. "We have been impressed with the level of opponent arranged for us today. Please accept this for our failure in the mission assigned to us."

"Uhm, okay," said Sakura, who had been VERY averse to the idea of having a swarm of rats around. However, these rats were not rabid sewer-dwelling filthy stinky rats. These were well-groomed, ninja-night-suit wearing, armed and dangerous rats. And it was difficult for her as a twelve year old girl to not go squee about how cute they were. In a deadly weapon-wielding ninja manner of course.

Kakashi watched, bemused, as one of his students signed a summoning contract for ninja-rats. Then one eye bugged and he froze. He was already thinking of them as his students?! No, the plan was to fail them.

"Since the worst show was by Sakura who simply stood around all the time, she will be the one to get tied to a post and not eat," said Kakashi.

Sakura's stomach chose this moment to growl and throw a fit.

After tying the girl to a post, Kakashi watched as the two boys looked over their lunch. Sakura's stomach growled again, as she was apparently, from a comment she made, on a diet.

Ah, Naruto was the first one to do it. He had her open her mouth and then used some rapid-movement technique to place some rice in her mouth. And... Sakura was mumbling something about wanting Sasuke to feed her?

Honestly, she'd already gotten fed some by Naruto and gotten what looked to be an amazingly useful summoning contract because of him - why was she still obviously regarding Naruto as something to ignore? Ah well, the mysteries of a young girl's heart.

Ah, now Sasuke was feeding her - to her obvious pleasure. And Sasuke's disdain if judging from expression.

Well, it looked as if he'd be passing all three after all.
