Those who are familiar with Bionicle are familiar with Energized Protodermis. Those who do not know might be satisfied with this little bit of history. Be warned, abridged as it is, it still contains spoilers.
Over 101,00 years ago, this substance resided at the core of the planet Spherus Magna. No one knows why, but the substance began forcing it's way to the surface in the region of Spherus Magna known as the Northern Frost. One of the Ice Agori (non-warrior inhabitants) discovered the pool and after he exposed himself to it by sticking his hand in it, he was instantly destroyed. The six Element Lords, who ruled over the tribes (and had control over the elements similar to a Toa) of Fire, Water, Ice, Plant life, Sand, and Rock, met to discuss what should be done with the spring. The Element Lord of Fire suggested that they share the spring, but the Element Lord of Ice caused an outrage by barring access to the spring. The clashing personalities of each lord caused a war to break out across all of Spherus Magna, turning all the tribes against each other.
But the rulers of Spherus Magna weren't the Element Lords. Instead, powerful but fallible Great Beings ruled over the planet (Could Lord Ao of Toril have been one of them?). Intrigued by the substance, they began experimenting with it. Before the war even broke out, the Great Beings built a gigantic mechanical prototype being, but because the energy source was unstable, the robot exploded over the region of Spherus Magna known as the Great Barren. At first they created the Iron Wolves to aid the warriors in their war, but when they learned that the planet was becoming structurally unstable due to the substance forcing it's way to the surface, they created shape-shifting, fully mechanical assassins later called Baterra, and programmed them to end the war by slaying all armed combatants, but leaving unarmed beings alone. When this failed, they started creating the Mata Nui Robot. Learning from their mistakes with the prototype robot, they built a Robot 100,000 kilometers tall, placed tiny biomechanical beings inside to maintain the health, and used a large amount of energized protodermis to stabilize the codrex power source.
The Fire tribe prevailed over all the other tribes, and began draining the spring. This caused even more structural damage to the planet. As soon as the Mata Nui Robot was complete, It took off to learn what causes war, and what could he do to keep another war from breaking out. Approximately 23.97 minutes later, Spherus Magna was split apart, devastating the planet's entire ecosystem. The largest fragment became the desert planet of Bara Magna, The fragment holding the majority of the water became the water moon of Aqua Magna, and the remnant of the jungle became the jungle moon of Bota Magna, and the remaining fragments became two Nebulae surrounding the new Bara Magna System. The map of the system became the Symbol of the Three Virtues of Mata Nui, and it also reminded him of his mission, which had the amendment of using his power to rejoin the fragments into one planet, and restoring the plant life.
We are not following the Mata Nui Robot. Instead we are following the Energized Protodermis that was left on Spherus Magna. What neither the tribes nor the Great Beings realized was that the substance was ... (appropriate dramatic build-up music begins playing)

When it sensed the destruction of Spherus Magna, it changed from a Gel-like semisolid similar in structure to hair gel to a shard of diamond-like crystal, and when the planet was ripped asunder, the crystal was lost to the stars. After a brief impact with the Allspark, the shard landed on what we would know as the ninja world, at the relative time of 10,000 B.C., and from that time the shard would shape a cave over itself and fade into obscurity, hoping not to spark another planet-shattering war.
Not all those exposed to Energized Protodermis are instantly destroyed. Only those who are not destined to receive the blessing it contains are destroyed. Those who are destined are forever changed into something more powerful than anyone could ever have been or ever will be. (Dramatic music starts playing again) Now my question for you is this: WHO OR WHAT FINDS THE POOL FIRST? because whoever finds it first is destined to receive the blessing the substance holds.
