Aang had to be crazy to take on the challenge of facing the Blind Bandit but he saw no other way to be able to talk to her. Katara looked over at the Avatar with concern on her face. Was Aang thinking straight? He had to see if the Blind Bandit was going to be willing to teach him how to Earthbend and facing her in the ring on the lai tai table was the only way to find out. Jumping down from his seat in the first row of the stands Aang floated down to the lai tai table and walked over to take his place in front of the Blind Bandit.
"Your friend has guts to take on the Blind Bandit," the male seated behind the trio commented to Katara.
Katara looked back to see a young man who looked to be the same age as her brother in a green tunic with a short braided pigtail. He had a look of confidence on his face and Katara could tell he knew the fighting style of the Blind Bandit very well.
"Aang can handle himself," Katara replied to the older boy.
At the same time, Sokka along with the rest of the crowd was cheering and yelling in favor of the Blind Bandit. "Booo booo, take him down Bandit!" Sokka yelled out.
Katara looked over at her brother a bit mad that he would actually call for his friend to fail in the fight against the Blind Bandit. "Sokka!" Katara admonished her brother.
The moment Aang stepped foot onto the lai tai table the Blind Bandit could tell her challenger wasn't a full grown man. In fact, he was so light on his feet that she wasn't certain if Aang was even male or not. To her Aang felt like he was another girl.
"Do people really want to see two little girls fighting out here?" the Blind Bandit questioned in an attempt to get the crowd to laugh at Aang.
The tactic worked to a degree and the crowd began laughing, booing, and cheering in favor of her. Aang stood there not really wanting to fight the Blind Bandit and called out to her.
"Look I don't want to fight you. I just want to talk to you," Aang said trying to reason with the Earthbending champion.
The Blind Bandit didn't want to talk she wanted to fight. Aang had taken the challenge and she had a reputation to maintain with the other benders at the Rumble. Instantly, she sent a large rock flying towards Aang. Out of sheer instinct Aang used his Airbending skills to leap into the air and avoid the rock. The crowd could see that their champion was confused about where to strike next. Aang floated down to the ground gently touching the lai tai table gaining the attention of the Blind Bandit.
"Somebody's a little light on his feet. What's your fighting name, the Fancy Dancer?" she asked taunting Aang.
Ranma couldn't believe what he was seeing. Just who was the kid who had taken Toph's challenge. He could tell the boy had no interest in fighting with Toph and yet he was able to evade every move Toph made. He's trying to get her to listen to him, Ranma thought to himself as Toph taunted the boy.
"Please just hear me out," the boy said just before another rock came flying his way.
Ranma watched what happened next. The boy sent the rock back at his sister using what could not have been Earthbending. Instantly, Toph broke the rock into several small pieces. However, before she could get out another attack on the boy he made a move that sent her flying off the edge of the lai tai table.
"Oh boy she's not going to be too happy about that," Ranma commented to the brother and sister in front of him.
"I'm sure Aang can talk her into considering what he needs from her," The girl replied with a tone of confidence in her voice.
Aang had beaten the Blind Bandit. Xin Fu was dumbfounded. Sokka was booing. Katara, however, was proud of her friend. The hard part would come next. Xin Fu was about to award the prize money and the belt when Aang walked after the Blind Bandit who looked visibly angry at losing the match against him. The crowd was unsure what to make of the whole situation.
"Look I just wanted to talk to you. I think you're supposed to be my Eearthbending teacher," Aang pleaded with the angry earthbender.
"You got the wrong person kid," the Blind Bandit snapped back as she opened a tunnel in the side of the arena.
Aang then felt a hand upon his shoulder. Katara had come over to console her friend and help him see that everything would work itself out in the end.
"Don't worry Aang I'm sure we'll be able to find her," Katara reassured him.
"Hey kid if you really want to find the Blind Bandit again just look for the golden flying boar," the young man who had been sitting behind them at the rumble called out to Aang.
The trio had a lead. They now knew where to begin looking for the Blind Bandit, the golden flying boar.
