Mischief Fragment: Mitternacht and Mikoto [Episode 235229]

by Kestral

Sakura stared, not sure what to do or make of this development. On the one hand, Naruto was well known for pranks and for having little sense of taste. Or much any other sense for that matter. On the other hand, this older Naruto seemed a wee bit different from the kid she'd known only a few days earlier.

The crystal staff Mitternacht was held in the woman's hands, pulsing occasionally with red-pink light.

"M-Mother?!" asked Sasuke.

"Yes, my son," said Mikoto Uchiha.

"I saw you, you're dead," said Sasuke.

"Yes, my son," said Mikoto. "The term you're looking for is 'ghost' - and that is exactly what I am."

"How?" asked Sasuke.

"How did I die? At the hands of your brother Itachi. How am I here? I never passed beyond. When Mitternacht called, I was able to answer."

"Mitternacht?" asked Sasuke, his eyes dropping to the staff. "This isn't a henge of Naruto's?"

"No, Naruto might consider pranking you, but this would be too cruel to you for him to do so," said Mikoto. "Sasuke. We must speak quickly. Naruto is providing the link and the body for this jutsu."

"This is really you?" asked Sasuke, having trouble crediting it but picking up on various cues and getting more certain as a result.

"This is what is left of me with my death," said Mikoto. "There is something I must tell you. Your brother wants you to kill him, he wants you to be strong and avenge yourself against him."

"That IS the plan," said Sasuke.

"And yet Itachi himself was merely the puppet of others," said Mikoto. "Even after death I cannot see further. Past and future mingle and shift. Details blur. Beware the serpent and the rot that spreads among the roots of the tree. The thief who stole my eyes after my death is but one-"

"I said 'Knock it off, Naruto'!" yelled Sakura as she jumped forward and slammed her fist into the boy she knew was just using a henge.

Naruto went down. Mikoto remained where she was, but now clearly transparent. And annoyed. Slowly, she began fading away.

Sasuke frowned, went to check on Naruto. Out cold. He considered that as the last trace of his mother disappeared, then looked directly at Sakura.

"What?" asked Sakura, feeling the coldness of Sasuke's full regard on her. "It was just Naruto pulling a prank! You know that!"

"No, it wasn't," said Sasuke.

"Oh come on, ghosts?" asked Sakura, begining to feel very nervous.
