"So what kind of game is this, Kino-san?"
Gurio Umino was looking at the brown-haired girl suspiciously. She just smiled.
"It's a game set that I found the other day. It's supposed to be a dice-based survival game or something like that."
He looked over the box. A desert planet, apparently. The box said that it included a plan for an adventure called "Shattered Lands".
"I'll have to look it over; remember what happened with TORG?"
"It won't be everyone; just me, Clark, Ami, and Ryo. And you, naturally, since you're so good at being the Game Master."
Umino stepped back at what he swore was the pleading tone in her voice. Makoto didn't usually act like this.
"I'll look over it with Naru-chan this weekend, after the Zodiac meeting."
"Aww, can't you look over it sooner?"
"I do need to keep my grades up, you know. Not everyone is dating a teacher."
They laughed at that, and moved on to lighter matters.
"...you've already got characters rolled up!?"
It was a week later, on Saturday evening. They were at Umino's house. Well, to be specific, Naru, Ami, Makoto, Minako, Steven, Clark, and Ryo were at Umino's house. Two more people than he'd expected, even if three of them were there just to make sure nothing bad happened. "Even after what happened with TORG, you want to play this?"
Ami and Makoto nodded. "We were having fun with TORG until... well, until we had to stop." Ami explained.
Umino sighed and took a look at the character sheets. "Well, with everyone else not playing, if anything goes wrong at least we won't be completely stuck. Quinina again, Ami?"
Ryo laughed. "She likes her healing skills; the psionics are a lot different from the ones in TORG, though. No bonus points for dramatic skill resolutions, either."
"I'll allow bonuses if it's over the top enough, that was one thing I did like about TORG - made you all think about how to make it exciting." Umino handed Ami back her character sheet - Quinina, Thri-Kreen Fighter/Druid (Water).
"Makoto, you're playing as a Half-Giant Gladiator... Not gonna try to blow stuff up again?"
"No; we decided that having four people reliant on non-physical combat would be a bad idea."
"Decided... you all met ahead of time to roll up your characters, didn't you?" He buried his head in his hands as they all nodded - Makoto very enthusiastically, Ami and Ryo less so, and Clark resignedly. He returned the character sheet to Makoto - Hippolyta, Half-Giantess Gladiator. "Ryo, you're a... halfling psionicist. It fits you. Clark, you're a Fighter and... what's this word?"
"Preserver. The book said it was like Mako-chan's Occult Ritual stuff from TORG, only less complex and more likely to make me evil."
"I see." He returned the two sheets - Ryo was playing as a Halfling Fighter/Psionicist/Thief named Greg (what a surprise), and Clark was a Half-Elf Fighter/Preserver by the name of Kent. Umino opened the book to where the adventure begins. "Okay, let's see where this starts at..."
