“Sewing club?” Daisuke said. “Sewing? I can't-”
“You won't have to,” Hiroshi reassured him. “Nabiki will realise we're involved into something serious.”
“You'd better be right,” Sayuri said, glancing round at the old sewing machines. “Or we'll end up as her own private sweat shop.”
“Never mind that,” Daisuke said. “Sewing is for girls. I can't do that.”
“Daisuke,” Yuka said, looking him in the eye. “Do I like sewing?”
Daisuke frowned, puzzled. “You don't, but every one knows-
Sayuri laughed. “I don't think you need to worry about thinking like a girl yet, not while you're thinking like that.”
“And it's only thinking like a girl that's bad for you,” Hiroshi said. “Not doing girl things.
Daisuke scowled. “I still don't like it.”
“We're not going to be sewing anyway,” Sayuri said. “We've got a mission from the kamis.”
“We might have to do some sewing,” Hiroshi said thoughtfully, “to keep or cover stories straight. We really need to think about that. We can't let anyone suspect why we're really spending so much time together.”
“Can't we just use the Master PC,” Daisuke asked.
“No,” Sayuri said flatly. “The kami told us they'd judge us on how we used it.”
“And they said we had to stop mind control,” Hiroshi pointed out. “I don't think they'd like us using it to control people's thoughts.”
“We should only use it to help people,” Yuka said, then smiled. “Can we use it to cure the curses?”
Hiroshi shook his head. “I thought about that. The Master PC readouts say the curses resist attempts to cure them. If we tried, almost anything could happen. We can't risk that.”
“I know that much,” Yuka said. “Curing the curses was the first thing I thought of, but I hoped you'd be able to think of something.”
“I made only myself smarter, not more knowledgeable. That priest might know something though, but we can deal with that later. Did anyone notice anything about us today?”
“They noticed Daisuke,” Sayuri said, smiling. “You're being pretty obvious about not looking at girls.”
“Any theories why?” Hiroshi prompted.
“No one really cares,” Sayuri replied. They're just glad one less boy is ogling them. Did Ranma say anything?”
Hiroshi smiled. “I think he skipped school himself the day we did, some mishap or other, and he's not exactly observant, outside fighting. Akane?”
“She did ask a few questions,” Sayuri said. “Then Shampoo turned up. I think she's curious, but not suspicious.”
“Shampoo? Did she say anything.” They'd have to cross Cologne eventually, but they wree nowhere near ready for that.
Yuka shrugged. “Just the usual.”
“Nabiki spun some stoty for the teachers,” Hiroshi said, then paused. “Um, does anyone know what she actually said?”
No one replied.
Hiroshi sighed. “Something else to sort out, but we also need to get started on the kami's tasks.”
“Akane goes last,” Sayuri said. “Once we get her out of Nerima, Ranma has no reason to stay. Shampoo and Ukyo will follow him, out of our reach.”
“But without the competition Akane will just grab Ranma, won;t she?” Daisuke said.
Sayuri smiled. “Not when she hasn't made up her mind.”
“All that can wait,” Hiroshi said. “We need to deal with the mind control first.”
Yuka nodded. “When it happens, we'll stop it.”
“It's already happening, according to the Master PC.”
“How bad is it?” Sayuri asked.
“Bad,” Hiroshi said. “There are five area spells affecting everyone in Nerima, and I have no idea what any of them do.”
“Why not?” Yuka asked, looking puzzled. “Can't you-”
“The Master PC can print out a description, but we simply can't read it. The spells would stop us realising there were words on the page.”
“Powerful,” Sayuri said slowly. “We need to find out what they are.”
“There might be some way to finesse them,” Hiroshi said. “There are a few more weaker spells, that only affect a few people, and a couple of family curses, but there are also thirty-seven people under individual mind control. I printed out the list.”
He pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, and pointed at one of the names. “This person has to be top priority.”
