Yui stopped, looking towards the massive behemoth that was Unit 01. "Dear?"
Gendo stiffened. There was THAT note in her voice. "Yui?"
"If anything happens, Shinji will need training," said Yui Ikari.
"But-?" Gendo looked from Shinji to his wife.
Yui half-turned and gave him The Look. Yes, it was That Look.
"Yes, dear," said Gendo.
Yui knelt down and addressed her son. "Shinji. Mommy is going into the giant robot for a test. Remember, you need to train and go to schools and become a great hero."
"Eh?" asked the little boy.
Yui nodded and got up and went to the Entry Plug for Unit 01.
Six years after Second Impact:
"So that's your son," said Fuyutsuki as he looked over the photograph. "Hmph. Sandoval's put on weight."
"Ah yes, I forgot you spent time with that group after Second Impact," said Gendo, taking the photograph off his desk, glancing at it, and then discarding it.
Rei picked it up and looked at the photograph for a moment before it was gently taken from her and put into a shredder.
"I remember those days well, still have a bit of problem in one knee whenever the weather gets especially damp," admitted Fuyutsuki. "Fighting those warlords who took over sections of Cambodia. Nasty times."
"Hmph," indicated Gendo.
"You don't keep any of the photographs?" asked Fuyutsuki.
"Useless clutter," indicated Gendo Ikari.
14 years, three months after Second Impact.
Shinji adjusted his sunglasses as he put the phone back on the receiver. "All lines are busy? An emergency? Could it be..."
Rhythmic sounds, the occasional explosion, and a giant monster lumbering across the landscape.
Shinji punched the palm of one hand with the fist of the other. "All right. Finally. It's showtime!"
The giant striding monster paused as it realized one of the Lillim was now pointing at it.
"Hey you!" shouted Shinji. "I'm giving you official notice! I'm throwing an asskicking party and YOU are invited!"
In a manner similar to one of Popeye's Goons, the Angel blinked as if it couldn't quite understand.
Misato's car screeched as it drove up. "Get in, am I late?... and what are you doing?"
"Taking pictures," answered Shinji, snapping a couple of Misato while he was at it. "Okay, oh, you might want to get moving before the debris hits."
"What?" asked Misato as Shinji slid into place.
CLANK! went a large chunk of something denting the roof of her car.
"AHHHHH!" reacted Misato, shifting gears and flooring it.
"Bring any weapons?" asked Shinji, looking over the back seat.
"Wha- no- AT field, what?" asked Misato as she wove around cars that had been abandoned, trashcans out in the street, a smouldering bit of wreckage, and a Colonel Sanders' statue that was thrown in for no apparent reason.
"Calm down, we're only being attacked by a kaiju," said Shinji, thumbing open a book titled [How To Kill Anything] and flipping through it.
"AGHHH!" yelped Misato as smouldering bits of gunship came raining down around them.
"And you didn't even bring any weapons except a piddly little .22 caliber handgun in the glovebox and a knife in your purse," complained Shinji.
"Wha- how did you know...?" asked Misato.
Shinji shrugged. "Let's get on with it, shall we? No section on giant kaiju? Worthless."
